Title

SBAS Education Programs: Snowy Plover Docent and Eyes in the Sky

Topics

The program will feature Santa Barbara Audubon Society's two main educational programs: The Snowy Plover Docent Program, and Eyes in the Sky.

The plover presentation will begin with a brief biology and natural history of the snowy plover, focusing on the pacific coast population at UCSB's Coal Oil Point Reserve.

The remaining part of this session will focus on the Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP), exploring questions like,

  • Why was the SPDP started in the first place?
  • How do the plovers benefit from a docent program?
  • What does a docent do?
(Some of our current Plover Docents will be present to answer questions.)

We will then visit the changes that have taken place for the plovers at Sand's beach (COPR) over the last three years and discuss the future goals to provide a healthy habitat with minimal disturbance of these tiny, threatened shorebirds.

The second part of the program will feature SBAS's Eyes in the Sky Program. Live birds of prey, no longer able to survive in the wild due to conflict with human activities will be presented by Gabriele Drozdowski. Eyes in the Sky educates about human impacts on local wildlife, and offers ideas and solutions to help protect the future survival of local wildlife species.
