Camp Internet Outpost Briefing

April 30 - May 4, 2001

Highlights :

California Water Wars

This month we will tackle the challenging issues of California water and land battles, with a focus on the Hetch Hetchy reservoir that was built to provide water to San Francisco, but, was built on National Parks land that had been set aside for preservation, not development. We have a CAMP CHALLENGE available to learn the different view points on this difficult issue. Start your explorations at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/water/

Live Interactive Challenge

On May 15 and 16 we will host a Hetch Hetchy Challenge in the Student Dig room - please reserve a day to come in a meet this online interactive Challenge. Let us know which day you can attend, and at what time, May 15 or 16, 8-5. Your class can choose to take the side of the developers or the conservationists, and we will debate this historic event's issues together. Let us know which position your class would like to take - or you can divide your class into two groups and one will be the developers and the other the conservationist who will debate online from the classroom or computer lab.

Art Contest !

Student paintings, poetry and drawings and digital art are invited. Deadline is April 30th. We suggest providing them with time to study the artists and photographers, writers and storytellers online and then providing them with materials and time to complete a work inspired by their online studies. Winners of the contest will receive a Mark Twain CD ROM with his works and biographical information.

VIDEO CONTEST - see http://www.rain.org/video/camp-lego-contest.html

TEACHER'S INTERNET DIGS - select a date you would like to feature your Dig in May. Install it one afternoon and we will feature it to the camp community - and your class - for 2-3 days following. Send your requested dates to camp@rain.org. If you still need to learn how to create a Dig - see the Teacher's Chatroom inside the password protected Teacher's Web - your private work space to test your links and learn!
