Camp Internet Outpost BriefingApril 9-13, 2001Highlights : California Artists and Adventurers Expedition Launch ! This month we feature one of the most fascinating areas of California history - the painters, photographers, and writers who have explored the California Backcountry and brought their vision of the wilderness to the world. These bold explorers took personal and financial risks to reach the backcountry, and their enthusiasm for the wonders they found there infused their art work and enhanced the world's romance for the California Dream. Art Contest ! Student paintings, poetry and drawings and digital art are invited. Deadline is April 30th. We suggest providing them with time to study the artists and photographers, writers and storytellers online and then providing them with materials and time to complete a work inspired by their online studies. Winners of the contest will receive a Mark Twain CD ROM with his works and biographical information. John Muir's Birthday ! This month is John Muir's Birthday, so be sure to enjoy his writings found in several places in the Backcountry section. April 21st is John Muir's Birthday, and all of our Camp teachers can find resources about Muir of great value on the Sierra Club Muir Exhibit web Site that is highly recommended for classroom use. See http://www.sierraclub.org/john_muir_exhibit/ . "Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. Here grow the wallflower and the violet. The squirrel will come and sit upon your knee, the logcock will wake you in the morning. Sleep in forgetfulness of all ill. Of all the upness accessible to mortals, there is no upness comparable to the mountains." VIDEO CONTEST - see http://www.rain.org/video/camp-lego-contest.html TEACHER'S INTERNET DIGS - select a date you would like to feature your Dig in April. Install it one afternoon and we will feature it to the camp community - and your class - for 2-3 days following. Send your requested dates to camp@rain.org.
