Camp Internet Outpost Briefing

April 23-27, 2001

Highlights :

California Artists and Adventurers Expedition turns into the Sierra Club History this week.

***Live Internet Dig*** on California Backcountry Artists this Friday the 27th 8am-5pm - drop by and get to know these amazing people and their world renowned works.

This month we have been featuring one of the most fascinating areas of California history - the painters, photographers, and writers who have explored the California Backcountry and brought their vision of the wilderness to the world. These bold explorers took personal and financial risks to reach the backcountry, and their enthusiasm for the wonders they found there infused their art work and enhanced the world's romance for the California Dream. Along with these artists were geologists and botanists who hike in groups and were destined to form one of the most influential environmental groups in the world - The Sierra Club.

Following John Muir's Birthday on April 21st, Camp Internet will be adding a short section on the birth of the Sierra Club, with links to biographies about its early members.

Art Contest !

Student paintings, poetry and drawings and digital art are invited. Deadline is April 30th. We suggest providing them with time to study the artists and photographers, writers and storytellers online and then providing them with materials and time to complete a work inspired by their online studies. Winners of the contest will receive a Mark Twain CD ROM with his works and biographical information.

John Muir's Birthday !

This past weekend was John Muir's Birthday, so be sure to enjoy his writings found in several places in the Backcountry section. All of our Camp teachers can find resources about Muir of great value on the Sierra Club Muir Exhibit web Site that is highly recommended for classroom use. See http://www.sierraclub.org/john_muir_exhibit/ .

"Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. Here grow the wallflower and the violet. The squirrel will come and sit upon your knee, the logcock will wake you in the morning. Sleep in forgetfulness of all ill. Of all the upness accessible to mortals, there is no upness comparable to the mountains."

VIDEO CONTEST - see http://www.rain.org/video/camp-lego-contest.html

TEACHER'S INTERNET DIGS - select a date you would like to feature your Dig in May. Install it one afternoon and we will feature it to the camp community - and your class - for 2-3 days following. Send your requested dates to camp@rain.org.
If you still need to learn how to create a Dig - see the Teacher's Chatroom inside the password protected Teacher's Web - your private work space to test your links and learn!

History Focus

This month is our chance to explore the popular California Backcountry Artists section with its history of photography, painting and writers who explored the early 1850-1900 Backcountry. Launch your expedition from http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/railroads/turn-century.html .

Science Feature

Join us for the new Plant Community explorations that will be our focus into the Spring. Take a virtual field trip through different plant communities. Learn how Native Americans used plants for medicinal purposes. Collect data about the native plants in your own region and study where they fit into the overall California Plant Community.
