Camp Internet Outpost Briefing

January 29 - February 3, 2001

Highlights :

*RANCHO DIG - this is the week we feature life on the Mexican Era Ranchos in California and the Bear Flag revolt that lead to the transition between Mexican and United States ownership of California.

*ZORRO WALKS THE PLANK - read this original Zorro story by Johnston McCaulley originally published as a weekly installment in 1922 and now, for the first time ever, on the Internet here at Camp Internet. Great story ! (excerpts, digest, and real full text chapters included)
*How to Create Your OWN Internet Dig in the Teachers Chat Room thru Feb 4th

* Science projects - set up your weather station

History Focus

ORIGINAL Zorro story now online ! Camp Internet has managed to acquire a rare out-of-print, original version of the Further adventures of Zorro. This great story takes place out on the Channel waters on a pirate ship and along the California coast. Zorro walks the plank ! On a haunted ship !

LIVE DIG this week is on the Rancho Era - see the Student Dig link off the main Camp page and join in anytime M-F 8am-5pm. What type of Rancho Era home would your students have chosen ? What started and then what ended the Rancho Era ?

CALIFORNIA INDIAN ADVOCACY - the resources from this important online Challenge are available anytime. You can read excerpts from two authors in the later 1800s describing how life has been for the native tribes during that century. http://www.rain.org/campinternet/calaifornia-and-the-indian-problem.html

Before we begin our Gold Rush explorations next week - be sure your students have had a chance to make use of the Camp's extensive Alta California resources that launch from http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/history/exploreland/ and http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/goldrush/before-world.html . From there you can take your students into studies of the first explorers of the California Backcountry - the mountain men, trappers, and wagon masters who first crossed the Sierras to bring families to California. The hardships were incredible, their courage amazing, and the results have shaped our State forever. We also include resources about the Mission and Rancho developments along the coast.

Meteorology

You will find our weather section under Science at this link http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/meteorology/ . And instructions on How to set Up Your Weather Station are available at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/meteorology/station-setup.html . We ask that you get your weather station set up as soon as possible, and then devise a method to have students take turn taking readings from the station - daily if possible, weekly at the least - and certainly for any day there is precipitation.

Teachers - Learn How to Create Your OWN Internet Digs !!!

One of our teachers favorite online training sessions is How to Create your OWN Internet Dig ! We will walk you through suggestions for designing, researching, and building your own Dig. You can try it out in the Teachers Chat room, and then in early February we will invite all participants to install their own completed Digs for fellow teachers to try out online. Later in February we will turn over a day to each of you to install your own Dig and showcase it to all of our students ! Show us your stuff !!!
