For the Week of January 24-28, 2000

This weeks LIVE feature : Weather Chat on Wednesday January 26th.

Gold Rush

This week we feature the harder truths of the gold rush era - the impact it had on real people in California as it moved from a romantic dream to a rough and tumble race for riches. You can read about John Sutter's losses, the Native American experience, the source of the anger that lead to the activities of the legendary bandit Joaquin Murietta, and the struggles of a woman in the gold fields.

In the reading section we have more Mark Twain and Joaquin Miller to consider, and the Mark Twain Story Contest. We are working on getting the Gold Rush quizzes online as well. And the Twain Jumping Frog books should soon be arriving and can be used as a classroom reward for having undertaken the Jumpin' Frog Jamboree project we suggest. If you haven't read The Miners Cat by Twain - or The Luck of Roaring Camp by Harte, be sure to take a look. These are amusing and poignant California tales.

Weather Section

Weather Project

Now that we are starting to get some more weather moving in, it is an ideal time to get those weather stations in place. Since you have to screw it to a pole of some sort, we do find a -1" square stake in a coffee can of gravel works fine and is the most flexible. If you decorate yours with any unique designs - or have very proud and active weather reporters - please send us a photo of the kids using it for our field report gallery. The GIS mapping database is being built, and will become available to chart reports on, so now is the time to get students assigned to serve as the weather monitors.

Special Events

This week we have the National Weather Service Chat live with Todd Morris, a senior meteorologist. CalTech recently released findings about the water temperatures in the Pacific that are on an unusual cycle, and this is a great opportunity to ask a weather expert what this all means for our own region. Mr. Morris will be online 10am-12noon on Wednesday January 26th. Please reserve by writing to camp@rain.org
