Camp Internet Outpost Briefing

November 6-10, 2000

New this Week - Paleo Dig for Backcountry - come learn about California's very rare dinosaurs, ancient seashell fossils, and even the mysterious pygmy mammoths who SWAM out to the Channel Islands as full grown mammoths and over time dwarfed into pygmy mammoths. Dig date is Wednesday the 8th all day. Please RSVP with time frame to camp@rain.org if you are able to attend. NOTE: we are moving the Modoc Indian Challenge to November 17th.

Welcome to the Cascades and Modoc Plateau

This week we enter the second week featuring the far northern California Backcountry in the Cascade and Modoc Plateau region. People, plants, animals, rocks and fossils are all a part of this unit. Did you know that one of the ONLY dinosaurs found in California was discovered in the Cascades ? Plus we will delve into the Modoc Indian War that is California's important and revealing Indian confrontation event.

Science - Paleontology in the Cascades - get out your Ammonite fossil

Let's do DINOSAURS and FOSSILS. Learn about one of the first dinosaurs ever found in California by taking your students to http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/paleontology/ to learn about Paleonotology and then make sure they meet the dinosaur Camp's Trail guide Dick Hilton found when out looking for seashell fossils http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/paleontology/dinosaurs.html . Your Supply Kit includes a REAL ancient Ammonite fossil that is very similar to those found in California an that date back up to 400 million years ago .. amazing! Most of California was then underwater, and the southern part of the Cascades were actually an ISLAND rising above the low seas.

History and Reading - Shasta and Modoc Life

Last week we featured the Shasta Native California tribe and this week we introduce the Modoc. The Shasta are representative of life all across the northern temperate rainforests of the Cascades .. the Modoc lived in what was the westernmost edge of the dry Great Basin desert in the eastern corner of California and southern Oregon. The trail to the Shasta Indians starts at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/shasta/ .

The trail to understanding the Modoc Indian War begins at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/modoc/ and contains its own Challenge at the bottom for an added learning activity. We ask you to have students read the section, then prepare a word document answering the questions at the bottom. On Friday the 17th, we will open the Student Chat room and ask students to post their writings. This is a NEW FEATURE on Camp Internet, one of the most important pieces of the White/Indian story for students to understand in regards to government mismanagement of the 'Indian Problem', a lesson to learn from and never repeat.

Ishi, Last of His Tribe

This poignant story is still relevant to our studies and we have constructed a good Ishi Internet dig to learn more about his life. You can ask for a special Ishi Dig session if your class is ready to explore his life. The Camp has made a condensed version of the famous Ishi story available at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/ishi/ .

This is one of the most famous stories of a Native Californian's life and we included a copy of Theodora Kroeber's historical fiction, Ishi, Last of His Tribe if you would like to read selected sections to your students direct from the original source. Ishi lived to the North of the Maidu on the slopes of Mt. Lassen.

Family Night

The featured Family night for November is on the 16th and will include Backcountry Rock Art discoveries . Please invite families to join us by sending home the FAMILY NIGHT INVITATION we will be sending by attachment soon. Guest is Bill Hyder from the American Rock Art Research Association and UC Santa Cruz, 7-8pm.
