Camp Internet Outpost Briefing

October 16-20, 2000

DIG date to note : 10/18 - Miwok Storytelling

Welcome to the Sierras !!

This week we begin our third of four weeks featuring the Sierra Nevada Backcountry as a regional area. People, plants, animals and rocks are all a part of this unit.

Science - NEW this week - Animal Studies in the Sierras

We have been featuring California geology with an emphasis on the Sierras and suggested you undertake the geode splitting project. You can find these resources under science, then geology, and the direct link is http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/geology/ .

Last week we had Ranger Jody from Sequoia National Park online as our Trail Guide as part of our botany studies. If you missed her chat, we'll have it in the archive soon and you can use our own Camp resources at to http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/nativebotany/ . To learn more about these ancient trees go to http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/nativebotany/Giant-Sequoias-Virtual-Field-Tri1.html and this is a link from the main plant page too.

This week we are going to move into our Sierra Animal Studies section at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/zoology/ . Who lives in the Backcountry with more than tow legs - or - NO legs ? Next week we'll add well known stories from famous writers and Indian legends about our brother and sister animals.

History and Reading - NEW this week - Miwok Stories and Maidu Life

We invite you to complete your studies about the Miwok with the NEW Miwok stories online for you to read at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/story-bc-index.html . Then we are ready to segue to the Northern tribe of Maidu at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/maidu/ . Who were the Maidu ? What was their life like ? What were their customs ? Who did they trade with ?

LIVE Inter-activity - Miwok Storytelling Dig 10/18

Our NEW Miwok Storytelling Dig is scheduled for this Wednesday the 18th anytime from 8am-3pm. Come learn about these stories and explore their history. What can we uncover about the Miwok to help us better understand their way of life ? Please RSVP if you can attend by writing to camp@rain.org.

Next Week - Maidu and Ishi

We will be moving to the far north of the Sierras next week, completing our Maidu feature and then nearing the Cascades beyond the Maidu and into the homelands of ISHI whose tragic tale is one every Californian should know. Then we will follow with the Modoc Indian War the largest sanctioned Indian conflict in California and learn what it meant for the American West. All important parts of California History and the American West.
