Camp Internet Outpost Briefing

October 2 - 6, 2000

Welcome to the Sierras !!

This week we begin a four week feature on the Sierra Nevada Backcountry as a regional area. People, plants, animals and rocks are all a part of this unit.

Science

This week we are featuring California geology with an emphasis on the Sierras. You can find these resources under science, then geology, and the direct link is http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/geology/ . There is information on general geology, rocks and minerals, and the Sierras to work with. If you like, you can divide the class into 3 groups and each one can work on reading one of the sections, and then report to the whole class on their findings. As soon as we can we will get that geology quiz active. This is the week to crack open those GEODES !!! Place one at a time in a sock and crack with a hammer - don't' smash. Then pull out the fragments and distribute around the classroom to show them quartz crystals up close.

History and Reading

The first Sierra tribe we ask you to study are the Miwok, particularly those living in the Yosemite Valley. We have lots of resources on line and are working on getting the Miwok quiz active too. Look for Miwok stories showing up online for reading too.

The Miwok section is in the History area and the link is http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/miwok/ .

LIVE Inter-activity

Your first LIVE Trail Guide chat is scheduled for Wednesday, October 4th - 9-11am. Dr. John Johnson of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Frank Lemos of the Oakbrook Chumash Center have agreed to attend. They have asked each class to select their top 3-6 questions so they will have a chance to answer them. PLEASE divide the questions up and post them specifically to one of the Trail Guides - 3 for Dr. Johnson and 3 for Mr. Lemos. Students must WRITE ……To: Dr. Johnson -or- To: Mr. Lemos ……at the beginning of their question. Otherwise they won't know which ones to respond to. This is very important to help them out from our side.

Next Week

Mark your calendars now - we will have a LIVE Miwok Internet dig on Monday October 9th in the student activity room. On the 11th, Valley View is hosting its Family Night. On October 12th we have LIVE Trail Guide - ranger Jodie Lyle from Sequoia National Park to teach us about those amazing ancient trees. Please rsvp for the 9th Dig and 12th Chat to camp@rain.org.
