Camp Internet Outpost BriefingOctober 9 - 13, 2000Welcome to the Sierras !! This week we begin our second of four weeks featuring the Sierra Nevada Backcountry as a regional area. People, plants, animals and rocks are all a part of this unit. Science Last week we featured California geology with an emphasis on the Sierras and suggested you undertake the geode splitting project. You can find these resources under science, then geology, and the direct link is http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/geology/ . This week we invite you to jump into learning about the magnificent Sequoia Redwoods - did you know these trees were one of the plants that lived with the dinosaurs in the American Southwest ? They live to be at least 3,000 years old and have a magnificent presence. Last year as part of the field trip session, Camp members toured the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite and saw the many ancient ones standing in that special environment. This week you are fortunate to have Ranger Jody from Sequoia National Park coming on line to answer your tree questions on the 12th - so study up ! To start your plant studies for the year, go to the science section and choose Native Botany which will take you to http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/nativebotany/ . Then to learn more about these ancient trees go to http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/science/nativebotany/Giant-Sequoias-Virtual-Field-Tri1.html and this is a link from the main plant page too. History and Reading We invite you to continue studies about the Miwok, particularly those living in the Yosemite Valley. We have lots of resources on line and are working on getting the Miwok quiz active too. Look for Miwok stories showing up online for reading too. The Miwok section is in the History area and the link is http://www.rain.org/campinternet/backcountry/miwok/ . LIVE Inter-activity You have three choices this week for interactivity. There will be a Miwok Internet dig open in the student chat room Monday the 9th and Friday the 13th all day - come learn and explore any time. As mentioned above the Trail Guide for the week is Jody Lyle from the Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park, on Thursday the 12th 9-11am. PLEASE RSVP for any of these events you can attend. Next Week We will be moving North in the Sierras towards the Cascades in our studies next week - into the homelands of the Maidu and Ishi, learning about their ways of life, and then next learning about the Modoc Indian War. All important parts of California History. _______________________________________________ Camp00-bc-l mailing list Camp00-bc-l@rain.org http://www.rain.org/mailman/listinfo/camp00-bc-l |
