The Maidu and the Sierras

John Bidwell's wife Annie, who grew up in the high society of Washington D.C., devoted her life to educating and caring for the Maidu who lived and worked on Rancho Chico, the Bidwells' 28,000 acre estate.

Bidwell Mansion in Chico, California is a State Historic Park and is open to the public, complete with Mrs. Bidwell's Maidu baskets and other memorabilia of these natives of California.

Let's travel back in time to around the year 1900, and find the young Maidu girl Wonoma helping her grandmother Nesuya near a babbling stream.
