The Maidu and the Sierras
Trade
One
of the Maidu's primary trading partners was the Wintun who lived to their
west in the Sacramento Valley. The important trade item the Maidu sought
from the Wintun was trade beads, which were counted in tens, and strung
on a string. Along with the beads, the trade also brought needed goods
to the higher Sierra altitudes that were not available otherwise. Up was
brought salmon, salt, pine nuts from the digger pines. Another trading
partner was the Achomawi to the north, who provided obsidian for arrow
points and blades, and a green pigment that was used to decorate Maidu
bow. Wild tobacco was also traded.
