The Shasta live at the southern most reach of the Cascade Range. Like the Sierra Nevada to the east, the Cascades run north south along the Pacific side of the North American continent. They were bordered on the east by the Modoc who lived in northeastern California on a drier plateau, and on the west by the Karok and Klamath who also lived in the heavily forested mountain region. The Shasta lived the most deeply in the Backcountry compared to other tribes in their area.

The Shasta have been called many different names - Saste, Shasty, Shastika and Sastidji - by their neighboring tribes. Anthropologists believe the basis for the name originally came from a chief named Sasti. They share their name with the extinct volcano, Mount Shasta, that sits in the center of northern California, near the Oregon border… a mountain rumored to be a place of mysterious occurrences. The Shasta lived along the river drainages of the Rogue River and Klamath River, including the Scott and Shasta Valleys. Their northern most outpost was on the Rogue River in what is now Oregon.
