Native American life in early California was a thriving system of over 500 small tribal groups who were a part of more than 60 large primary tribes. These early natives lived all over the land from the coast to the desert.

For Explore the California Backcountry, we will focus on four distinct regions of the state, and, with-in those regions, study a selection of the Native American tribes to study over a three month period this year. The four regions are the Northern Rainforest and Rivers, the Sierras and Upper Foothills in the East, the Western Channel Islands and Coastal Mountains, and the Southern Desert.
