First, let’s look at the characteristics the backcountry people shared.

Sometimes what they have in common takes a little study to understand, other times it is apparent in their very way of life.
Each tribal region we will study developed:

tools
food gathering
cooking
housing
education
clothing
trade and
religions ceremonial practices which were in direct response to their local habitat.

Their tribal stories that formed their oral history reflect this direct relationship to their natural environment – coyote, bear and eagle, sacred mountains, the calling of rain - and in our reading track you can enjoy some of their humorous or insightful stories as we work through the study units.
