Camp Internet Expedition III - Briefing 10
Surfing History in the California Channel
Overview
For this short holiday week, we will be taking a look at the history of
Surfing around the world, and then zeroing in on the history of surfing in
the California Channel. Have some fun with this one ! The guest Trail
Guide is Malcolm Gault Williams, previously the manager of the non-profit
radio station at UC Santa Barbara, and now working on a book on surfing
history. The chat will take place Tuesday the 24th, at 9 am, so tune in
for some surfing facts and fun.
Catching Up
We've been moving through a lot of material in the first 10 weeks, now we
are going to slow down and help everyone get caught up. Next week we will
look at the Development of the Channel - oil, fishing and mariculture, and
then we enter Expedition IV. Expedition IV will not require extensive work
- it will be a survey of the partner agencies working to bring you
resources on Camp Internet. We have people out in the field filming
virtual field trips with some of these partners, so for the first time we
plan to get video integrated into the program. Use December to wrap up any
previously unfinished activities, and to get the Camp Passports caught up
through Expedition IV if at all possible.
Fall Community Nights
So far we have co-hosted Camp Community Nights with two classrooms at
North Verdemont, one at Maple, and three at Oro Grande. Trail Guides have
participated with enthusiasm from the Cabrillo High School Aquarium
( Dave Long, who spoke at the summer workshop about his methods for
getting an aquarium established on his campus), and the Channel Islands
National Marine Sanctuary ( Ben Waltenberg, who also spoke at the summer
session on GIS ). Upcoming are Valley View in Coachella on December 1st,
and Lake Arrowhead on December 8th. You can join in the chat room from
home and there is still time to plan your own Community Night before the
Holidays - just let us know.
And then, we need to look forwards to the Spring. The project
plans are to have the students work on history and/or
science projects that can be demonstrated via the web site during the
Spring, and to showcase these at Spring Community Nights at every school.
These can take place in April and May, so ask your students to start
thinking about what project they might want to start planning for the
Spring. Its fine for them to work in small groups - or even as a
classroom. Let us know what types of projects they have in mind and we
will help anyway possible.
Live Field Trips
If you have decided on the date and type of Channel field trip your class
would like to take, let us know so we can get it on the calendar. Some
teachers have asked to partner up with another class for the field trip -
great idea !
So far we have heard that Maple is planning to go on a whale
watch, North Verdemont to sail to Anacapa, Round Valley to Catalina for a
hiking tour, Upland Community School to Catalina for a camping trip that
we hope to get the Jean Michele Cousteau Institute involved in, Oak View
is going to the Catalina Island Marine Institute - everyone is busy
soliciting parent support of course. The Camp will have some limited
funding available to assist with the interpretive services and/or boat
costs. And we will have staff available whenever possible to film the trip
and also to conduct live Internet broadcasts back to the other classrooms.
The funding for the field trips will be made available on a competitive
basis.
Qualities sought for in funding candidates include : regular participation
in online activities during the school year, co-hosting one or more
Community Nights, completion of the Field Report Forms by the teachers,
and cooperation in reaching as many of the Camp goals as possible. And you
don't have to go out on the Channel, there are some dockside field trips
possible too - like the new Aquarium in Long Beach, or historic boat
museums.
Online Field Report Forms
We are redesigning the Camp activities, page layout and other features as
we move through the pilot year. Your input is essential - especially in
regards to appropriate content levels. PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORM ONLINE !
Best News - North Verdemont's Camp Internet activity has been nominated
for a Smithsonian Technology Award ! They were nominated by Steve Jobs,
CEO of Apple - congratulations to Judy Dennington and Susan Barkdoll !!
