Camp Internet Expedition III - Briefing 8
November 9-13
Romance of the Channel Islands
Overview
This week we begin to move from the northern Channel Island ranching
history to the diverse history of Santa Catalina Island. Catalina has,
from the start, supported a variety of enterprises run by colorful
and dramatic personalities. As the one remaining privately owned island,
and closest to the large metropolis of Los Angeles, Catalina has faced more
intense development pressure than any other Channel Island.
Over the next week we will learn about the events that have shaped
life on Catalina since Statehood, the Gold Rush, through the Civil War,
and into the 20th century.
Make a Date
We have the Treasure Hunt for this Expedition ready to roll in the chat room,
and need you to reserve a date and time so we can host your class in this
interactive learning activity. Please select a morning or afternoon block of
1-2 hours, November 9 - 20th.
Main Chat
This week we feature a LIVE chat with the Director of the Catalina
Island Museum, Stacey Otte. The Museum is housed in the historic Avalon
Ballroom Pavilion right on the bay in Avalon on Catalina.
Study up on the materials the Camp will post online, and then come into the
Chat Room on Thursday, November 12th, at 10 am.
She will be with us for an hour, and then will check back and answer more
questions later on. Please let us know if your class can attend this
Thursday, at 10 - 11am. Other special guest will be announced as
confirmed.
PTAs and Community Nights
For the classrooms or computer labs who are not in a position to bring the
parents onto campus for a special Camp Night, we ask you to let your PTA know
that we would like to arrange a time to bring a presentation to one of their
meetings over the next few months. A Camp Counselor will attend and give
the parents a demonstration of the Camp activities during a regularly
scheduled PTA evening meeting. This will help build wider support for your
classrooms participation at your school site.
All of our outpost leaders are invited to attend the scheduled Camp Internet
Community Nights. For San Bernardino / Riverside, there are events
scheduled at north Verdemont School November 17th, and Maple
School the 19th. For High Desert participants,
Oro Grande School is opening its doors on Thursday the 19th. We
invite our Outpost Leaders to attend one of these sessions to keep
in touch with your fellow Camp participants.
Camp Counselor Site Visits
Our lead Camp Counselor, Susan Barkdoll of North Verdemont is being joined
by Joan Ward of Maple School in arranging dates and times for site visits
to the schools. You can use these visits to introduce the students
to a real, live representative from Camp Internet, to have the Counselor
host a Treasure Hunt or any other learning activity of interests,
to ask questions you may have, and to receive in-service support. They
will help you fill out the Camp Field Report Form if you haven’t
sent that in off the web yet, and are there for you to turn to with any q
uestions or suggestions about how to better incorporate technology into
your classroom. To arrange a date and time, talk to Susan Barkdoll who is
scheduling visits in November and December.
If you have photographs of your school, class or special projects
be sure to send them over for scanning and placement on the Camp Internet
web. Mail to: 1562 Cougar Ridge Road , Buellton, CA , 93427 - we'll
return photographs after we scan them in if you request it.
