![]() for the week of September 10-14, 2001 Welcome to a full year of Exploring the California Channel Islands with Camp Internet ! You are joining over 200 classrooms in California who will be exploring the Channel Islands online with Camp this year and we will be bringing you fun Internet Digs and expert Trail Guides online for fascinating question and answer sessions. This week we invite you to read the INTRODUCTION to the Islands track located at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/channel-introduction-2001-2002.html . And to take advantage of the image map with live links to island information located at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/Islands/ . INTERNET DIG - How Did Karana Survive? This week is your first week getting familiar with our challenging INTERNET DIGS. We are featuring "How Did Karana Survive?" and it will use some very interesting source materials for research. Students will refer to rare film publicity articles, to the first-ever-on-the-Internet historical source materials from the 1880s, to a Robinson Crusoe reference, to Camp's introduction to the Island of the Blue Dolphins - and - will be asked to tell us how THEY would survive if stranded on a desert island. Even if students have not seen the film, or read the book, this will give them a taste for the story and its historical and media context. Open Tues-Sat 7am-5pm. ISLAND of the BLUE DOLPHINS VIDEO This video is currently out of print and we are sharing a copy with you as an educational learning activity. Many classes start out the year watching this video to get a feel for life on a Channel Island. Others wait to show the film as a reward after reading the book. However you plan to implement this media is fine, and please make sure that along with the book or film study, they also get familiar with the historical sources materials we have online ( and which will be the basis of a future Internet Dig coming up). We encourage students to grasp the similarities and differences between the true story, the book, and the movie so they become objective readers and viewers. Submit your LESSON PLANS If you would like to prepare a LESSON PLAN on the Lone Woman/Island of the Blue Dolphins fact-and- fiction comparison as a topic (and use it as one of the seven required plans for the year), we welcome you to send us a copy of your work. Every teacher who sends a lesson plan in will receive a color brochure about the Channel Islands published by the National Parks. Again - WELCOME to the 2001-2002 Channel Islands Expedition ! _______________________________________________ Camp01-isl mailing list Camp01-isl@rain.org http://www.rain.org/mailman/listinfo/camp01-isl |
