Channel Islands Briefing

December 4 - December 8, 2000

Highlights :

*Astronomy Chat with professor from UCSB Remote Access Astronomy Project, Thursday morning 9-11am on the 7th. *Teacher Librarian Chat Thursday afternoon 2-5pm in the Teachers Chat Room *Family Astronomy night online, Thursday the 7th 7-8pm

New This Week - As we move from Native American to the European Explorers, we invite your students to start off on this new trail. From the history section, select Exploration and Colonization of the Channel Region at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/expedition2/ . When you open that section, start with European Exploration and there you will find an overview that is this week's feature at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/expedition2/europeanexploration.html.

This week we are featuring the history of visits by Cabrillo, Drake and Viscanio, and in our reading section invite you to introduce students to Henry Richard Dana's book, Two Years Before the Mast. On his journey from the east to the west coasts, Dana's writings changed the way Americans thought about pre-statehood California, and how they thought about the rights of the sailors making the perilous journeys across the seas. We have REAL original text online from the sections that include his Channel Islands experiences in the 1830s.

Astronomy

We continue to feature Astronomy in all science sections and the unit runs until the Winter Break. There are interesting Astronomy and Archaeoastronomy resources online for your use in the Camp Science section. We have also provided a star wheel for you in your Expedition Supply Kit to check out to students. The goal is to show them a map of the current night sky during class time, help them identify 3-4 key constellations, and then send them home with the wheel one night each to search the night sky with their parents to find at least two of the constellations. Between now and Winter Break, there are enough nights for most classrooms to send the wheel home with each student.

Upcoming LIVE Chat

Our featured live chat during this week is on Astronomy and features UC Santa Barbara's Remote Access Astronomy Project with Professor Tom Fuller. He will be providing a virtual tour of their web site - and how to use their online telescope to bring astro-images right to your desk top - on December 7th 9-11am and in the evening 7-8pm for a Family Night. Mark your calendar for these live learning opportunities that are 'out of this world' !

Teacher and Librarian Chat

Bring your school Librarian online this Thursday the 7th 2-5pm and enjoy a virtual online literature tour of Camp resources. We are inviting interested schools to join us in applying for a State Library grant to bring more Camp and Camp-related reading into the classroom next year.
