Channel Islands Teacher Briefing

Week of February 22-25, 2000

Missions and Rancho Era

Live Internet Dig

The Dig for this week will be on the Rancho Era on Thursday the 24th from 9am-noon. This will compliment the student's studies of Alta California. Please rsvp to camp@rain.org.

Channel Island Region Reading

You now have available online excerpts from Two Years Before the Mast, Ramona, and the historical re-countings of Guadalupe Vallejo. These are all fine examples of the life and times of California life before statehood.

The Zorro section is included this week to provide a fictional example of the struggles of the Alta Californians in the transition from Spanish to Mexican to United States rule. External web sites with Zorro resources include www.zorro.com and www.billcotter.com/zorro . The Camp has an over view of Zorro and his popularity as a Robin Hood of the West, with detail on his possible role model, Joaquin Murietta. We also provide insight into his role as a model for the young Latino community, and suggest other reading materials that are interpretations of this same theme.

Teacher Training

We have previously posted in detail the invitation to attend the upcoming online Teacher Activity Forums. They are also listed on the calendars in the Teacher's Base Camp. Code to reach them use - ID: camp99 Password: keys99.
