Camp Internet

Channel Islands Teacher Briefing

Week of January 3-7, 2000

Treasure for Trade - the wonders of the Orient

Welcome to the New Year and the next section in Camp Internet. In December we looked at the early explorers who sailed to California, and during January, before we move into the Mission and Rancho period, we are going to be looking at the life of the pirates who sailed the Channel waters. The materials we are making available for your students to read and interact with are exciting, challenging - and - encourage them to become critical thinkers.

We will be adding the URLs for specific study units in the briefings this year to help you navigate straight to the intended documents and activities.

Channel Treasure - History

This week we will take a look at the tempting treasures that were moving along the coastal waters of California during the period Spain ruled much of the New World. These Manila Galleons were laden with exotic goods from trade with Asia, and passed through the Channel on their way down to Mexico.

The section is under Exploration and Colonization.

The first section is called Oriental Trade Route

Treasure Island - Reading

In the Art and Literature section, this month will be focused on reading Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, or viewing one of the films that have brought this classic pirate treasure story to the screen. The author of Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson, spent a year in California, and the story of his time here - and the love story that brought him here - is available for your reading online

The introductory material on Treasure Island provides you with a set of critical thinking topics for student consideration, and a related set of questions to answer as they read the book or view the film. The book is available online if you do not have sufficient copies in your school library. Three recommended films are also suggested varying from a half hour to two hours in length.

The main Treasure Island menu is at

Treasure Island Challenge has the critical thinking questions at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/culture/treasure-island-challenge.html
