Channel Islands Teacher Briefing
Week of January 31 - February 4, 2000
Passport Update
This week is a transition into a new section for each of the History, Reading, and Science tracks. Your students can now access all Passport materials required to complete section one - Native Americans. In section two - Exploration - they have resources to answer 1-8, and 9-14 will be covered in the coming weeks. In section four - Earth Sciences - they have resources to answer 1-9. We are now starting section five - Marine Studies.
The Mission and Rancho Era
As soon as your class wraps up their Pirate studies, they can turn their attention to a major historical event in Alta California - the building of the mission system, 1769-1820. We will focus on the missions that played a significant role in the Channel Islands history, La Purisima, Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara, and San Gabriel. We will also take a look at the Mexican Rancho era following the revolution, and compare the quality of life for the Native American population. This will provide the materials to complete section two.
In the reading section we turn our attention to the writers of that period, or who wrote about that period. We have a historical account by Guadalupe Vallejo about life in California during the mission and rancho era, specific excerpts from Two Years Before the Mast that cover Henry Richard Dana's actual time spent in the Channel waters and ashore. The Zorro section on the Robin Hood of the West is also timely. And the excerpt from Ramona will be appropriate.
Marine Biology
Over the next two months, we will be providing Marine Biology resources for your science track. The Sustainable Seas Expedition, hosted by National Geographic, will be coming to California in May. We will have opportunities to work with them and co-host broadcasts during their live expedition. The resources the students learn to use now in the Marine Studies unit will come to play as they get involved with the live Expedition in May.
Let us know when you begin the Marine section and we will have the bioluminescent plants shipped out to you. These need to be opened immediately and provided with indirect light. At night, they can go home and be 'baby-sat' by students on rotation. The students will be able to activate the bioluminescence in the dark by gently tapping on the bag. This is a great parent/child learning activity at home. Send notification to camp@rain.org when you begin this section please.
Mark your Calendars for CUE
The Computer Using Educators (CUE) non-profit organization host two teacher conferences a year. In the spring, May 11-13, the conference will be in Palm Springs. Janice Ross of Lake Arrowhead School has been invited to lead a session on Camp Internet, and will be joined by fellow Outpost Leaders Laurey Meier, Ken Decroo, and Cheryl Perez. They will present a Camp program over view, demonstrate their own innovative applications of the program in the classroom, and feature student work.. We hope to see you there !
We will be sending you materials to help get the word out to fellow teachers and to invite them to attend the session on Saturday May 13th, 11:30am. If you would like to learn more about CUE, go to www.cue.org. The Camp has become a Bronze CUE Sponsor, and will soon be a link from their Sponsor web page. Watch for us in the CUE newsletter too.
