![]() for the week of October 2-6, 2000 Science - featuring Channel Geology and Geodes Which islands were made from volcanoes ? Which are the continuation of mountain ranges from the mainland ? We are featuring the geology section for Islands studies this week at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/geology/ . We suggest having them all read the overview, and then select one of the eight islands each to study up on and right a report about. If you can set aside class time for reading the best report on each island out loud, then all students will learn about all islands, but only are assigned to write on one. AND this is the week to crack open those GEODES!! Place them in a sock and tap with a hammer, one at a time, then divide the broken fragments up among the class to study. History and Reading - Chumash feature Last week we featured the launch of the human history of the Channel Islands region at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/expedition1/ex1intro.html , and http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/expedition1/nativeamericanlife.html . This week we invite you to delve into the Chumash section at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/expedition1/chumash1new.html . You will have your first LIVE Trail Guide chat this week on Wednesday the 4th, 9-11am. Please RSVP to tony@rain.org for this weeks events. We have lots of material online to help your students get familiar with who the Chumash were in prehistory so you can ask these anthropologists the very best quality questions. How are those Reporter Wanted assignments going ? Next week on October 10th we will be opening the student activity chat room for you to post them. If you can not attend on the 10th, but have works completed, you can email them to camp@rain.org and then we will post them with the student and school name that you list at the top of the email. Then everyone can check in the archive and see who wrote the best - or most unusual - reporter pieces. LIVE Inter-activity - Trail Guide Chat Your first LIVE Trail Guide chat is scheduled for Wednesday, October 4th - 9-11am. Dr. John Johnson of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Frank Lemos of the Oakbrook Chumash Center have agreed to attend. They have asked each class to select their top 3-6 questions so they will have a chance to answer them. PLEASE divide the questions up and post them specifically to one of the Trail Guides - 3 for Dr. Johnson and 3 for Mr. Lemos. Students must WRITE ……To: Dr. Johnson -or- To: Mr. Lemos ……at the beginning of their question. Otherwise they won't know which ones to respond to. This is very important to help them out from our side. Also this week is your first Island Family Night on Thursday October 5th and Frank Lemos has promised to attend from 7-8 pm online in the Family Room. Please make sure your families know this is coming up. We will send you a special announcement to print and copy to send home. Remember - if you are having the Open House - ask the room to select the top 6 questions so Frank has a chance to get to everyone's as best as he can. Next Week October 9-13 is the week we invite you to play the Rainbow Bridge game with the ribbon, and we are hosting your Reporter Wanted activity in the student activity room on Tuesday the 10th. As above, if you can't be there live on the 10th, send us the reporter pieces in advance by email and we will post them for you so everyone can enjoy them. Return Home
