Camp Internet Channel Islands Expedition Briefing
for the week of March 19-23, 2001

Highlights :

RAILROADS DIG !! Come learn about the massive efforts entailed by people from all over the world to build the transcontinental railroad that opened California to the east. Were they really 'ruthless as crocodiles' as the newspapers of the time said ? Who really 'built' the railroad?

This Week in Channel Island Region History

This week we close up the Shipwreck and Smugglers Studies that began http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/expedition2/shipwrecks/ . You can still have your class learn about the smugglers, trapping boats, and shipwrecks that plagued the Channel in the 1800s - why they happened and what their impact was good and bad. These events lead to the near extinction of the sea otters, brought much needed - but illegal - supplies into the Spanish held missions and presidios, and caused the loss of life and fortunes. It is a colorful and important period of California history as the gold rush got underway and more and more shipping began to traverse the dangerous waters of the Channel.

Next week we shift to Island Development History - the remarkable people who built the first ranches, hotels and small industries on the Islands.

Marine Studies

Along with the ongoing weather studies Camp hosts all winter, we are also working on our feature on Marine Studies and that trail begins at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/channelhistory/classes/sea.html . Learn about life under the sea, along the shore, and explore an ecosystem rarely seen by the human eye.
