Clan of the Island Fox

The Island Fox is a unique animal that lives only on certain channel Islands. As a relative of the mainland fox, this smaller f ox shares similar characteristics. The Island fox is clever, quiet, and a little cunning in its quest for food. It has learned to survive in a much harsher environment than the mainland fox as it has scarcer food resources and sometimes harsher weather. The fact that the Island Fox ever got to the Islands, that it has been able thrive under difficult conditions, and that it is a version of the species known only to exist on the Islands, indicates that it is intelligent, adaptable, and likely to endure on the Islands.

The Latin name of the Island Fox is Urocyon littoralis littoralis. They now live on all of the Channel Islands except Anacapa and Santa Barbara. And on each island, there is a unique sub-species of fox. It is a dwarf version of the mainland Gray Fox. The fox eat a variety of foods to survive - from mice and lizards to berries and fruit, from prickly pear cactus fruit to native wild cherries and bird eggs.

In the Camp, the Clan of the Island Fox represents a terrestrial animal - that is one that lives on the land. It is an honorable Clan in that it has great survival abilities, and it also has beautiful fur and a sweet intelligent face. We expect the Clan of the Fox to develop the clever, resourceful characteristics of its namesake !
