Camp Internet
Distance Learning Project
Teacher Training and Support
Each summer, preceding the school year Camp Internet program,
subscribing teachers are invited to attend a 2-1/2 day training workshop
in preparation for the classroom activities that will begin in September.
The workshops are held in Santa Barbara, on the coast of California, a
charming Mediterranean style town with towering peaks behind and waving
palm trees lining the shoreline. The emphasis in the workshop is on the
subject matter, and the ways technology will be used to better explore the
subject matter. These are not 'how-to-use-a-computer' workshops - they are
' how do we use computers to better challenge our student's intellectual
development?' in nature. Participants are expected to have a basic working
knowledge of using email and browsing the web. Knowledge of participating
in chat rooms and listservs is desirable, and experience with audio and
video streaming is recommended.
Summer 1998 - 1999
The workshops will be held Wednesday August 12th - Friday
August 15th. Sessions begin at the Camp Internet Center, 1129
State, in the downtown cultural district. Opening at 2pm, the first
sessions offers an overview of the program, an introduction to Camp
Directors and staff, and hands-on technology activities.
During this session, teachers will be asked to decide if they will be
participating in
A) the daily multi-disciplinary track,
B) a weekly
multi-disciplinary track, or
C-D) a weekly single subject track during
the school year ( C. Science, D. Social Science/ Literature ). In response
to this decision, participants will then break into smaller groups to
begin learning about the program content over the next two days. At 5pm
there will be a welcome reception for all participants.
The second day of the workshop, teachers will be working in groups,
A-D. The morning hours, 9am-12noon, will be focused on activities in the
Social Sciences and Literature; the afternoon sessions 1-5pm, will be
focused on activities in the Earth and Living Sciences. If a teacher will
be working multi-disciplinarily, then they should attend both morning and
afternoon sessions. If they are single subject, they should select one or
the other. For the single subject teachers, the period they are not in
session with Camp staff will be spent on field trips to participating
Trial Guides history or science agencies. Lunch is provided.
The third day, the group will come back together as a whole and have an
opportunity to try out some of the hands-on activities that students will
be encouraged to undertake. The suggested format and management of the
Science and History Fairs will be covered. Details on participating in the
year end live Camp Expedition out to the Channel Islands will be provided.
For teachers in the multi-disciplinary track - and those who did not
attend all field trips they wished the previous day - additional field
trips will be taken to participating agencies. Lunch will be provided.
In the afternoon of the last day, the group will be invited to
participate in a Channel Cruise on board The Condor, the Camp's research
vessel. The trip will leave at 2pm, and return by 5pm, concluding the
workshop program.
During the school year, the teachers will have online support from
Camp
staff, and whenever possible, trained Camp Counselors available physically
in the classroom. The part time camp Counselor positions funded by the
Technology Literacy ( California Dep't of Education ) and Distance
Learning ( USDA ) project grants will be supplemented by assistance from
trained personnel from County Education Offices.
