Greek Mythology Unit

Week Two

Objectives:

gold circleFollowing a discussion, TLWD understanding of modern words derived from Greek mythology by working in a small group to create and present an illustrated poster that correctly explains the origin, meaning, and current usage of an assigned word.

gold circleDuring a guided discussion of text, TLWD understanding of the personality of a particular Greek god, goddess, and hero by responding orally to questions with 80% accuracy.

gold circleAfter research using both print and online sources, TLWD further understanding of the personality of a particular Greek god, goddess, and hero by writing a Character Sketch of at least one-half page that accurately discloses the truth about the character.

Day 1

Vocabulary/Discuss (handout) - List of words & their meanings derived from Greek mythology

Pass out handout created from Favorite Greek Myths titled "Modern Words with Greek Origins" page 1 & page 2. Discuss with students these words and their derivations.

Vocabulary/Research - List of words from Mythweb: How Myths Have Influenced our Language

Divide class into groups of 4-6 students. Assign each group a word from Greek mythology; research its origin, meaning, and current usage with print and online sources previously made available to them; create an illustrated poster with a brief explanation. Model the assignment with example for Achilles. Give students 9 X 12 drawing paper for this project. Word choices: Atlas, Hercules, labyrinth, Midas, Pan, Procrustes, Sisyphus, Tantalus, Titans.

Day 2

Oral Presentation - Groups present & explain posters

Have groups take turns presenting and explaining their posters. Assure that every student participates in the group's presentation.

Day 3

Read & Discuss - "Arachne" pp. 45-48

Select students to read this section aloud assisting with pronunciations where necessary. Guide a discussion throughout with the following focus questions:

  1. Who is Athena?
  2. What opinion does Arachne hold about herself?
  3. What challenge does Arachne put to Athena?
  4. Describe the contest between Athena and Arachne.
  5. Based on Arachne's behavior, list some words that would describe her personality.
  6. What words does Athena use to describe Arachne? W
  7. hat are the results of the contest?

Based on the story, model an example of a Character Sketch for Arachne.

Day 4

Read (independently) - myths about other Greek characters from Greek Gods & Heroes and online sources listed on Greek Mythology WebQuest page.

Direct students to choose a Greek character about whom they wish to read. Tell them to make observations about the character's personality. Suggest that they take notes.

Day 5

Write - Character Sketch for selected god, goddess, or hero
