Elements of Literature:Introductory Course
The following are the units of focus in the Sixth Grade Holt Literature textbook: Moments of Truth: Age of Enlightenment Many people may go through life without questioning what happens to them. Sometimes they are confronted with a decision or an event that makes them rethink their ideas of what is truly important in life. Often, they grow from their experiences and become different people afterwards. They have a moment of truth -- an experience that teaches them something about themselves.
Portfolio Writing Assignment: NARRATIVE WRITING -- Autobiographical Incident Share a true story about yourself. As you tell about your memory or feelings, bring the experience to life with sensory details. Building Bridges: Will You Be My Friend? Friendship allows people to connect in a meaningful way. While it may take patience to overcome various barriers to friendship, the process of extending oneself toward another person represents the essence of trust, love, and inner growth.
Portfolio Writing Assignment: PERSUASIVE WRITING -- Evaluation Write an evaluation of "The Secret Garden". Include a brief summary of the story, your judgment of its worth, and a recommendation. Explaining Our World: Fact and Folklore: Tell Me Why Contrasting fictional stories with scientific accounts provides insight into explanations of things in the natural world.
Portfolio Writing Assignment: DESCRIPTIVE WRITING -- Observational Writing Write an essay describing something you've observed closely over a period of time. Be specific by including facts, sensory details, and actions. |
