Brief Background:
Camp Internet is the
Education Program of the Visible Light Distance
Learning Consortium and the RAIN National Public Internet Network.
Camp Internet was one of the first Internet programs in the world
to bring
K-12 students online. Beginning in 1992 students from 4th grade through
High School were introduced to the Camp Internet curriculum.
In 1993, the Program
was recognized by the National Science Foundation and RAIN Network initiated
a Pacific Rim international educational networking project that
continues to this day with partners in China, Hawaii, Australia, Nepal,
and Costa Rica.
In
1997, Camp Internet became a Technology Literacy Challenge Grant
provider for the US and California Departments of Education, a project
that saw Camp’s teacher training and curriculum delivered to over
350 classrooms under grants and private contracts. In 1998, Camp
Internet also started serving rural classrooms under USDA Distance
Learning funding and now works with classrooms in four states under
USDA support, including Indian Schools for Native American students.
Camp Internet was honored
to receive a Smithsonian Innovation Network Award for Education
Technology and is now serving schools in the United States and abroad.
Over 1000 teachers have received training, and over 25,000 students
in classroom, afterschool and library settings have participated.
