Camp Outpost Leaders this is an important workshop where you will learn how to take your own digital pictures from your computer and upload them to a group directory. This will then allow you to build your own Field Reports or Internet Digs during the year, using images you have pre-sized and selected. First project is to showcase your own class. Follow the directions below, and if you need help, we will be online Mondays the 22nd and 29th for live support 8-9pm. Or you can post questions below and we will answer asap.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Oct 18, 10:05AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Step One OPEN this link button and print out the training document. Study the document and get ready to try the upload exercise.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Oct 18, 10:06AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Step Two SELECT one to three photos of your school, classroom Outpost, or students at work, and use them as your test uploads. Be sure to follow the directions on sizing and location to upload to. The group directories are based on which training session you attended. Watch how you name the images on your computer so when you upload them you can easily find them again and they have no spaces in the file name. All this is detailed in the instructions. If you dont have a digital camera, a photo shop can take regular film and put the images on a disk for you.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Oct 18, 10:06AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Step Three WRITE a short paragraph describing what your class Outpost is studying with Camp Internet and your goals for the program this year in a word document. Paste in the URL locators for the images where you want one, up to three maximum, images in your story. This is your test work and once you have perfected it, you will then post it in the public-view Field Report Center so the different schools can get to know about each other
. Let us know where your school is, what the natural environment is like, peoples favorite things to do in the community, and about your students goals. If you mention students by name, use only first names. Make it fun for the other students to read. You can include a link to your schools web site too, but please do not link to commercial sites or personal web sites. Lets keep the Outposts focused on one another in this exercise please.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Oct 18, 10:06AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Step Four INSTALL your Outpost Field Report here in this workshop chat room. Be sure your name and school name is in the YOUR HANDLE box before posting so we know who the author is. If you want to make changes, modify the original document and repost until you are happy with it. Be sure to save your original on your computer where you can easily find it again. Once you have a final version, saved where you can find it again, come back to the main Field Report Center in early November and install your Field Report under your track heading. Lets let the students learn about one another and turn the Internet into a positive school-to-school communication tool !

Although I had lived in the Coachella Valley for over 25 years, I had never before visited the Indian Canyons in Palm Springs. I started with Andreas Canyon. At the trailhead I found grinding holes used by the early people.

Carl and I figured out that it is necessary to have thumbnail pictures saved as GIF in order to put them in as a handle. To convert a file to GIF in Photoshop LE you need to go to image/ mode/ indexed color. Then save as GIF. Some graphics programs will let you save straight to GIF. We hope this works now.

Jessica: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:08PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marcy, I teach kindergarten at Taylor School. I chose the Global Garden track because of my change of grade from third grade to kinder. I thought it might be more appropriate. Am I correct?
...and Thanks Marcy :)

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Karen - welcome to the chat. How long have you been working at Dana ? Do you do any afterschool tech support or only during school hours ?
tino@maryburen: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello everyone,
My name is Tino Aleman. I teach Third grade at Mary Buren Elementary. I chose the Explore the Global Garden track.
: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:10PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bob@GETA Hi Marcy, I am a teacher at Mary Buren Elementary in Guadalupe. I noticed a guide listed for Sequoia and Kings Canyon, but when I clicked on the hotspot by her name, it sent me to the park website. How do I arrange a chat, or contact Jody Lyles, I think it was, to dialog?
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:12PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Vannessa - we are planning to do a Youth tech Corps project with your students as an afterschool project. If you can help with this, we will provide the hands on and online learning materials (Carl brought many today) and you will bring the students online ot work on the Cam project. Up to 12 can then qualify for a pass to go on a marine floating lab cruise out of Oxnard by the Spring if they complete their passports and partiicpate responsibly online. We would also like them to do some study projects at the library too. Read Island of the Blue dolphins for example ....
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bob - are you going to be doing Backcountry with your students ? We will be setting up chats for Backcountry classes through out the year and use the weekly briefings to alert you so you can get online - or - send us questions in advance. Right now we are studying the Cascades ( earlier it was central/northern Sierras) and next we shift down to southern Sierras and desert so its coming up !
kking: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy,
I've been working at Dana for 6 years in their computer lab. I've been there since the beginning and set the lab up. this is the first year that the lab remains open for one hour after school. On tuesdays I have a cooking class in the lab that researches on the lab and then on thursday they actually cook with a different instructor.

Hi Tino - do you have a garden ara at Mary Buren ?
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:16PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Karen - tech/cooking class sounds like a great idea. Our USDA funding will be bringing some new computers to the school for classroom use too next year, and we have donated 4 computers before, plus a very nice portable ,and the wiring to get the 4 connected to the internet via your lab. We want to be a good partner to Dana School and really appreciate you attending today.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tino - that question was garden AREA ...
tino@maryburen: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Marcy,
Yes, We have a great garden and Grow Lab at Mary Buren Elementary, "The Children's Garden."
We will be posting pictures soon on our district and school web site: www.sbceo.org/~guadsd
: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bob- Thanks, as I recall there is a calendar that lists all this info?
tino@maryburen: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy,
Yes, last year I was in charge of the Grow Lab with a partnership with Waller Genetics in Guadalupe. Also we transplanted to our area in the garden.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Guadalupe teachers - our USDA funding proposal most recently awarded features bringing 18 new computers to Guadlupe for school use, and possibly afterschool use. How are your classrooms set up for Internet access ? I heard you got a new lab too ? The new computers will be tied to getting new teachers involved in the rpogram, so you two can benefit directly, and then more next year.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bob et all - the Camp calendars are available to keep you updated - inside the tracks or throught the teachers web. Students also can access it in their student center.
: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thanks Marcy for the feed back. I am willing to do what ever it takes for the kids here in Guadalupe. I will work close with the Mary Buren school to help the students and the teachers.Vannessa
: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:23PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bob@MB I have a lab in class begging for four net capable computers. How do I apply for four of the eighteen? Are they PC I hope?
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Also - events are announced every Monday in the briefings by email and then go online for web viewing. Gardens doesn't have a calendar yet as its in its pilot year and next year we will be better able to make a calendar.
Jessica: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy, will there be something on the Global Gardening calendr soon?
Timothy - Camp: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tino - the Global-Garden GIS mapping project is beginning to gather information on Fall and Winter gardens. We hope to have the map show the diversity of garden activity that can take place in Southern California, winter and summer.
Be sure to send in information on your garden activities.
The Camp School Garden registry is at:
button
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bob - the USDA will take about 3 months to process all the paperwork, so send an email to camp@campinternet.net to request them for your room now and you will get first consideration.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:27PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Vannessa - are there 1 or 2 days a week that you could devote afterschool time to hosting Camp Itnernet ? Then we could promote it in the community newsletter ot get more youth invovled ... maybe Tues/thurs ? There are special activities we can do with them 3-5 if we know what days you could focus on ... we also want to do a GPS project with them (did Jeff Foote make it by today to mention that ?)
tino@maryburen: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy,
We have our rooms wired for internet access. We just need the computers with internet capabilities and hooked up.
Thank you
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:29PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Afterschool programs get the passport folios too but the kids need to sign up for the program before they get those folios. Teachers print out the passports that go in them, and we provide the color stickers that are there awards for completing each section. If you didn't get the right track's stickers, call Sherie at 1-800-89-2823 and aks her to send you the right ones. The passport masters can also be sent, or can be downloaded online in the teachers web under learning materials. We also have a few programs operating Saturday mornings ...
Carl, Camp Trainer: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thanks, Marcy, for joining us live at the Guadalupe GETA computer center. We have several things yet to look at in our "Introduction to Camp Internet." We'll look later at comments of yours in this chat.

Several of our Youth Technology Corps groups have begun making short (5 min. ) video's to share on the Camp web site. If you are working with any video let us know. And we're always looking for good art projects to post on the Camp web.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Oct 30, 1:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tino and Bob - glad to hear its wired. Jeff Foote said an application went in for more computers but I don't know if they are going to your grade level if awarded. Check with Jeff - jfoote@sbceo.org and let me know what you find out. Our USDA porject will help with hardware help but shouldn't duplicate another project of course ... We have worked with Ann Webb before - hope to see her back in the program next year. She raised funds to take the kids to Yosemite for 3 days - it was great !

..............
..General Notes:
The Coahilla Indians lived on this very spot in Andreas Canyon beginning at least 2000 years ago and continuing into the 20th century. We hiked up a year-round, spring fed stream running the length of the canyon, and returned along the canyons south rim. The stream banks are an oasis in the high desert, with commanding views of nearby rock mountains and the Santa Rosa mountains in the distance to the east-northeast.
Mortars Rock, where we began and ended our hike, was the site of a long-occupied Coahilla settlement. The rock itself was sort of a kitchen, where oak acorns, often gathered miles away, were ground into an acorn flour which, leeched and mixed with nearby steam water, constituted an important food source. The many mortar holes are evidence of centuries of collective pounding and grinding by generations of Coahilla.

We are covering California standards as a policy in these
classes. The Ancient South West theme fits nicely with the
6 grade ancient history curriculum.
At this time the Standards have us covering the
Islamic Empire in seventh ; we connect here through
"current events" and also through comparisons of similar
climates , topographies, types of dwelling, tribal cultures.
etc. The 8th grade class gets a healthy serving of
Native American lore through U.S. History Standards
supplemented with Camp Internet's technology-driven and thematic website and support materials.Comparative cultures follow the multicultural components. All are participating in improving computer litercy, language literacy and art-based related projects.

Hello. My fourth grade class is at James Madison School, located in Indio in the Coachella Valley. Our portion of the lower desert is rapidly growing. The desert once covered with mesquite, palo verde, and creosote and the land once used for agriculture, covered with date palms and citrus groves are now covered with houses, stores and golf courses.
I have participated in the Island track for three years, and appreciate the opportunity to incorporate technology into the classroom. This year's students are eagerly working on their passports; and they like the challenge of the digs. A constant "buzz" of excitement caused by their anticipation of the field trip to Anacapa Island is always present. They cannot stop talking about the ocean animals that they hope to see. The challenge for me is time management. Our grade groups for language arts for two hours a day, which does leave much time with my homeroom class. Even though we cannot spend as much time as I would like, the students are learning and are enjoying themselves with all Camp Internet activities we do. It will be a great year!

Welcome to room 705, the home of thirty Camp Internet explorers.
We are part of Madison Elementary School that has a population of about 1000 students. Madison is located in Indio, a desert community east of Palm Springs. Our desert is rapidly decreasing as new homes and businesses are being built. We are fortunate to be fellow campers with our neighboring classrooms of Mrs. Gallatin and Ms. Jackson. The students are extremely excited about participating in Camp Internet. While the students enjoy working on the digs and on their passports, they are particularly involved in finding their spot on the earth with the help of GPS.
