Uploading
to your Group Directory
These
instructions are provided to help Camp Internet teachers upload
image files for online Field Reports to a shared library of
images. Please keep this shared directory of images for teachers-only
and not provide student access to this area, in order to keep
it secure for all of your, and your fellow teacher's images.
Preparing
your images:
Four
important things to recognize before beginning:
1.
Resize Your Image. Image size will ideally be 240x240 or
240x180, up to 320x240 pixels, or else the image overwhelms
the report. File size must be less than 60 kb or the system
will not accept it. We will have to do housekeeping and remove
files that are much larger to help keep room available in the
library for everyone.
2.
Convert your image to the .jpg file format. It may already
be .jpg, so keep it that way. If asked to choose what quality
jpg, choose medium. (The .gif format is also acceptable, though
.jpg is more commonly used for photographs.) Reminder: If the
original large-format image is important to you, save your resized,
web-ready version under a new name.
3.
Name your Image. Name it well. Use a descriptive file name.
It's a good idea to start the filename with your initials or
abbreviated name so you can identify your images in the shared
directory. Use no spaces or strange characters -- not allowed
on Internet. Either runitalltogether - or - put an_underscore_between_words.
And you MUST include in your filename the .jpg (not .jpeg) or
.gif file type extension. This is the only way it will show
as an image. (Any other extension shows in the report room as
a BUTTON link).
4.
Upload your images. Upload them -- using our simple upload
tool -- to the directory listed below. Simply go to the directory,
and follow the instructions noted below.
For
school year 03-04, use the directory:
http://www.rain.org/~camp03
Using
the upload tool:
Once
you are ready with .jpg or .gif images sized and named correctly,
you can upload up to six pictures pertaining to each Field Report
to the group directory. Just follow these easy directions by
keeping one window open (or printing out) while you also have
the activity window open on your screen.
Have
Fun !
1) Open your Web browser i.e. Netscape Navigator or Internet
Explorer.
2)
Enter the web address noted above: http://www.rain.org/~groupdirectoryname
Example: http://www.rain.org/~camp03.
3)
This will open an Index of the Group directory window.
4)
Click on upload.php.
5)
Click on the Browse button, to locate the file on your computer
that you wish to upload to the server's Group directory.
6)
The file upload window will open.
7)
Find the file you wish to upload in the file upload window.
You may need to click on the down arrow on the right end of
the Files of Type field and choose All Files(*.*). Once you
locate your file on your drive, click on it to select it and
then click on the Open button.
8)
Click on the Send File button.
9)
Once you have clicked on SEND, you file will upload. You will
be presented a confirmation window where you see the image just
uploaded. Double check that your image is smaller than 320x320
pixels (see height = and width = in the key above the image.)
Remember your filename so you can find your image later. Also
confirm that your filename includes the three-character .gif
or .jpg extension, and that the filename has no spaces. That
ensures that your image will display correctly. (If the system
does not allow you to upload, it is probably because your file
size is greater than 60 KB, and you must use your image editor
to re-save the image again as a smaller file before uploading
anew.)
10)
If you have another image ready for upload, note at the bottom
of the screen that the upload tool is ready for you to "Browse"
again and select another image to upload. 11) To view your uploaded
images, click on the Back button of your Web browser, to return
to the Index page
of your Group Directory.
11)
Your uploaded file should now be in the uploads folder. You
may verify this
by clicking into the "uploads" directory. http://www.rain.org/~camp03/uploads
You may have to refresh your browser screen to display the updated
index.
