The name of these clouds seems like an oxymoron. However, it is actually a hybrid of a stratus and a cumulus cloud. They can be though of as individual cloud elements, characteristic of cumulo type clouds, clumped together in a continuous distribution, characteristic of strato type clouds. Stratocumulus clouds appear frequently in the atmosphere particularly with the passage of a frontal system. They are low level clouds.
