Ancient Southwest Briefing

Sept 10-14

Welcome to a full year of Exploring the California Ancient Southwest with Camp Internet !

You are joining over 35 classrooms in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado who will be exploring the Ancient Southwest online with Camp this year and we will be bringing you fun Internet Digs and expert Trail Guides online for fascinating question and answer sessions.

This week we invite you to read the INTRODUCTION to the Southwest track located at
http://www.rain.org/campinternet/southwest/sw-welcome-2001.html

INTERNET DIG - What are the Mysteries of the Ancient Southwest?

This week is your first week getting familiar with our challenging INTERNET DIGS. We are featuring "What are the Mysteries of the Ancient Southwest?" and the Dig will use some very interesting source materials for research. Students will refer to geology, paleontology, archeology, and their own imaginations and ideas to prepare answers to the mysteries presented in the Dig. From Pangaea to First Peoples, from Dinosaurs to 1.7 billion year old rock at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, a wonderful story unfolds in the Dig. This will give our student explorers a taste for the breadth and depth of their upcoming studies and discoveries across the region we identify as a unified biological, geological, and cultural region that includes the Four Corners States, California, Baja California and Mexico. Open Tues-Sat 7am-5pm.

MESA VERDE or CHACO VIDEO

This week is the recommended time to have students watch the MESA VERDE or CHACO video provided with your pack to gain an understanding of this modern mystery that still has scientists working hard to understand. Why did they choose to build in these caves? How did living there improve the quality of their life? Why was their stay so short ? And where did they go ?

Submit your LESSON PLANS

If you would like to prepare a LESSON PLAN on an 'Ancient Southwest Mystery' - focusing on natural or cultural history - as a topic (and use it as one of the seven plans we will help you prepare and/or share during the year), we welcome you to send us a copy of your work. Every teacher who sends a lesson plan in will receive a color brochure or other educational material from a national park that is actively protecting the mysteries of the Ancient Southwest!

Again - WELCOME to the 2001-2002 Ancient Southwest Expedition !
