Southwest
Briefing
Nov. 5-9, 2001
This month is NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY Month - observe this important
facet of American history with Camp Internet all month!
Greetings Campers - Our new MESA VERDE section is ready for viewing
so please have your students work on that exploration. We will
be adding Chaco Canyon next to continue the GREAT PUEBLO theme.
In the READING area we continue to feature the amazing life and
wonderful story - The DELIGHT MAKERS - written by Adolph Bandelier.
Be sure to read the warm and fascinating description of Bandelier's
life in the field written by Charles Lummis (founder of the Southwest
Museum in Los Angeles). How did they survive those harsh field
conditions ? And in such good humor ?
DIG this week will DISCOVER MESA VERDE, Tues-Fri and next Monday
7am-5pm.
TRAIL GUIDE CHAT this week is Monday the 5th 10 am with Charles
Fitzpatrick, lead Education expert with the GIS software firm
ESRI. Come learn about how students are using GIS around the world!
Go to #2 'Trail Guide Chat' Room on the main portal, open CAMPWIDE.
TEACHERS - IMPORTANT PROJECT
Please post an intro about your school in the FIELD REPORT Center,
open Campwide Field Report, and add your introduction to those
already presented by your fellow teachers. Goal is to get as many
as possible online this week so we can invite students to view
them soon. Practice and review is in the TEACHER'S CHAT ROOM inside
the private Teacher's Web.
GPS
We encourage our SW classes to get out their GPS units and start
recording any native plants on their school grounds. Record the
name of the plant, its location (latitude, longitude and elevation),
and if you have a digital camera, you can start taking pictures
of the plants. Build up your archive of native plants identification
for a project we will do together in the winter. Your GPS Lesson
Plans are due in December and will be based on using a local location
as the field study.
