Ancient Southwest Briefing

January 14-21, 2002

This week’s features include Paquime – the largest city in the Ancient Southwest and Weather.

Southwest DIG for this week, Jan 15-21 is on Discover Paquime Weather – the little known ancient city that was a trade route hub for all of the Ancient Southwest.

CAMPWIDE DIG is on Meteorology and we will include a few questions directly pertaining to weather patterns effecting the Ancient Southwest.

New SCIENCE Activity is to begin using the Meteorology Section http://www.rain.org/campinternet/meteorology/ and this month we will add a unit specifically on Southwest weather.

Be sure to catch-up on past DIGS in the new ACTIVITIES link from the Southwest trailhead.

This month we are visiting Chaco Canyon and the hardly known but largest city in the Ancient Southwest, a site now in Northern Mexico, called Paquime. We will also learn about the mythic ‘Race of Giants’ and their rock art in Baja California as we study south of the border. Plus we have new units on Pueblo Trade Routes and the Mimbres to enjoy. Then we will wrap up the month by pondering “Where DID They Go?”.

Your Digs will be on Chaco, Paquime, Baja Rock Art and Where Did They Go ?

This month we are also offering Day Two GPS field trips that can also be refresher training days with trips to the Huntington Gardens, Santa Barbara for a Low tide Walk, or to Malibu. See the News and Events link on the main portal for dates and places.

If you have student projects or teacher reports on activities to post as your Fall Field Report, please post by track under FIELD REPORTS. And now is the time to start planning your Winter and Spring student projects as we will have a year end Field Report activity in May. We also have suggested field trips available in the new News and Events section (first selection) and welcome news of other field trip locations you recommend to your fellow teachers. Hands on classroom and community-based learning offer our students a way to bring their online learning to life so please plan at least one of each for the coming months.

Please also plan ahead to participate in the next Family Night – January 31st – on Astronomy. The announcement is also available as a pdf file to print out in News and Events from the main portal. http://www.rain.org/campinternet/upcoming_events.html
