This week’s features include Baja – A Race of Giants ? Astronomy and Weather

Southwest DIG for this week, Jan 22-28 is on Baja Rock Art – Were They a Race of Giants?  Remote rugged caves in Baja hold some of the most mysterious rock art in the world. Local tribes call the artists – A Race of Giants – who do you think painted these giant murals?

CAMPWIDE DIG is on Meteorology and we will include a few questions directly pertaining to weather patterns affecting the Ancient Southwest.

LIVE ACTIVITY coming up is a Channel Low Tide GPS Walk in Santa Barbara January 26th for teachers and their families. RSVP to camp@campinternet.net if you can attend. And we also have room to join the GPS walk to Malibu Lagoon on January 31st, meeting at the State Park parking lot at either 11am for the full session, or 1pm for the afternoon session. Please RSVP for either / both.

TWO SCIENCE Activities this month are:

1. Begin using the Meteorology Section http://www.rain.org/campinternet/meteorology/ and in particular to work with the Channel Weather area http://www.rain.org/campinternet/meteorology/meteorology-channel.html .

2. Wish on a Star – follow direction in Campwide Briefing to select a star and work online with a remote robotics telescope to capture a picture of your selected stellar object.

COMING UP

Plan ahead to participate in the next Family Night – January 31st – on Astronomy. The announcement is also available as a .pdf file to print out in News and Events from the main portal. http://www.rain.org/campinternet/upcoming_events.html . Families can join in from home computers – or teachers open their classroom doors and invite the families on campus for this popular event.

General Activities

If you have student projects or teacher reports on activities to post as your Fall Field Report, please post by track under FIELD REPORTS. And now is the time to start planning your Winter and Spring student projects as we will have a year end Field Report activity in May. We also have suggested field trips available in the new News and Events section and in Teacher’s Web. We welcome news of other field trip locations you recommend to your fellow teachers. Hands on classroom and community-based learning offer our students a way to bring their online learning to life so please plan at least one of each for the coming months.

Be sure to catch-up on past DIGS in the new ACTIVITIES link from the Southwest trailhead.

This month we are visiting Chaco Canyon and the hardly known but largest city in the Ancient Southwest, a site now in Northern Mexico, called Paquime. We will also learn about the mythic ‘Race of Giants’ and their rock art in Baja California as we study south of the border. Plus we have new units on Pueblo Trade Routes and the Mimbres to enjoy. Then we will wrap up the month by pondering “Where DID They Go?”.
