Ancient Southwest Briefing
February 4-11, 2002
Let’s Discover
the REALLY Ancient Southwest and Enter the Reading Olympics !!!

This week we begin
our REALLY Ancient Southwest Studies that will be the feature all
month. We start with Geology at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/southwest/geology/
and will then move to Dinosaurs at http://www.rain.org/campinternet/southwest/dinosaurs/
Ancient Southwest
DIG for this week, Feb 5-11 is a chance to discover ‘How Old IS the Grand
Canyon?’ You will be amazed to change your sights to geologic time where
ancient comes to mean BILLIONS of years ago, not thousands or even millions.
For all of the month
of February we get to explore these truly ancient times – from early geology
to the dinosaurs – what will we discover ?? One clue – the Ancient Southwest
was very different than it is today – it was moist, forested, and had
swamps. But the rivers that run through it have been doing so for millions
of years and reveal a geologic history that is mind bogglingly ANCIENT!
CAMPWIDE DIG is
on Volcanoes. Learn where there are volcanoes in the Southwest – and
how they have formed the petrified forests, mountain ranges, and threatened
lives in the Southwest.
READING OLYMPICS
begin this week and last all month. To enter, prepare a book report per
student, 50 words or more, and post in the Field Reports / Campwide room.
Be sure to have students include their first name, teacher name, and school
in the ‘Your Handle’ box before posting so we can identify classrooms
participating. The 36 classrooms with the greatest number of reports posted
will win a ‘Silver Medal’. Grand prize winning classroom also wins a Mark
Twain CD. Students can prepare reports on books read in class or for homework,
or on the e-books and excerpts available right here on Camp Internet.
More than one report per student is encouraged.
COMING UP
Join us for our annual
VOLCANO CHAT with Dr. Trombly, our special Trail Guide from the
Southwest Volcano Research Center. February 15th, 9-11am.
Each class please bring 6 key questions as a group. Use the Campwide Dig
to learn more about volcanoes and to help prepare great questions for
our Trail Guide.
TEACHERS
The new teacher training
workshop is in the teachers web under DIG WORKSHOP Chat Room. This
is a required learning activity and one you will be proud to complete.
Spend this month preparing your Dig and testing it in the workroom, and
then reserve a date in March or April to showcase your Dig! Your students
will be thrilled to go on a Dig their own teacher has created!!
