Hopi Homes

The Hopi Pueblos resemble the ancient homes of their ancestors - closely knit apartments stacked two - three stories high, and they continue to be owned by the women in the family with children raised primarily by the mother's clan members following an ancient matrilineal tradition.



with corner fireplaces to prepare food and find warmth on icy winter nights,



and with kivas nearby accessed by ladders leading down to the subterranean meeting and ceremonial chambers

The Hopi are world renowned as one of the Pueblo Peoples who have best kept their traditional lifeways intact since before European colonization. Perched high atop remote arid mesas, many of the Hopi continue to live in closely clustered adobe pueblos that at first glance seem so made of the soil of the land, with few trees or bushes and no farmland or water in sight, that it is hard to believe these dry, buff-colored communities have supported generations of native peoples.



Few trees, little rain, an incredible expanse of sky - how is it the Hopi have survived these many hundreds of years ?
