Camp InternetField Report - August Kraemer -![]() East Anacapa Island "A peaceful silence surrounds the tiled-roofed buildings below the lighthouse on Anacapa, a silence that is emphasized, more than broken by an occasional blast from the foghorn, or a cry from a gull flying overhead. It is a reminder that Anacapa is an island, a world apart, isolated from the mainland by eleven miles of open ocean." As you can tell I didn't take a lot of notes but I did buy the trailguide and map of East Anacapa Island. While I visited the island I felt if somehow I was the intruder. My presence was not protested by other humans, but by the birds, mostly the gulls that either watched with curiosity or vocally showed their disaproval of my visit. No matter how much I tried I could not pretend to be a fifth grader. Maybe I have been around to long to minimize the effect of my actions, on others and the world around me. I did however see the importance of protecting the environment and enjoying it's beauty. The images of the giant cliffs and the ocean below. The sound of the sea lions on the shore. I took about a dozen photos on my trip the remember and to show others. I heard another discribe the Coreopsis as a dead ugly plant. I thought it interesting, and wondered what it looked like when it when it was not dormant. The boat trip to and from was used to reflect, observe the birds, dolphins, enjoy the view, and to meet new friends. August August 23 1999 |
