Santa Rosa Island
The second largest of the Northern Channel Islands, Santa Rosa Island is made up of over 52,000 acres and is located about 27 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara. Most of the island is made up of hills and grasslands, with some high mountains and deep canyons. The island is famous for three unique features - it has a rare stand of Torrey Pine trees, is the site where Mammoth skeletons have been discovered - both the giant Imperial and the small pygmy - how do you think they got out to the Channel Islands in the first place ( there was never a land bridge)? Most recently, Santa Rosa Island gained national attention when human bones found on the island were dated to 13,000 BC - making them the oldest human remains yet known in North America. Did these shaggy beasts and the Native People live side by side ? Scientists are working to find out.
