The
Chumash men who made the canoes formed a guild of boat builders.
The
knowledge of how to make the boats was kept secret in a brotherhood of
boat builders, and gave them great prestige. Where Carpinteria is now
was the boat building center, and the early European explorers recorded
seeing many boats on the shore under construction.
