Welcome to the Camp’s DIG on ---- Learning from the Indians. When we explore the backcountry, we can learn a tremendous amount about these remote places by studying how the first people lived there for thousands of years BEFORE European and American settlers – and people from all over the world – arrived in California for the GOLD RUSH.

Backcountry Explorers Team: . . . . Tue, Sep 24, 7:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Today we are going to get to know a little about an unusual man who chose to live with California Indians in their villages for weeks at a time to learn more about their lifeways. His name was George Wharton James. We will also be introduced to the life of Ishi, the most famous California Indian who shard his knowledge of Indian life with an anthropologist, Alfred Kroeber, who in turn with his wife, Theodora, wrote several books about Ishi’s life that allows us to still continue Learning from the Indians.
