Welcome to Camp Internet's Water Wars Debate about the damming of the Hetch Hetchy River. This construction project sparked intense heated debates at the beginning of the 1900s, and has become an important issue again at the beginning of the 21st Century. The core issue at stake was whether National Parks lands, established to preserve our natural backcountry heritage for future generations, could rightly be flooded and destroyed in order to provide water for a distant urban city. To read up on this issue - and see both sides of the story - start researching the issues from both the environmental conservation and the urban developer point of view at button The Developer’s view point is located at button and Muir and his supporter’s statements and testimony is located off the main menu in the Water Battles section. button

To; Jordan at Miramonte - can you tell us why you think it is improtant not to harm our national parks ? Read here to find out what other people who sahre your opinion think we should do about it ... button .. would you agree that "The integrity of the National Parks should be inviolate. The National Parks, of all places, should be kept for the enjoyment of present and future Park visitors, and should not be invaded for non-Park purposes. As David Brower, the former Executive Director of the Sierra Club, has stated: "The axiom for protecting the Park System is to consider that it is dedicated country, hallowed ground to leave as beautiful as we have found it, and not country in which man should be so impressed with himself that he tries to improve God's handiwork." ??

I am For the dam because illnesses are spreading from the dirty water. The city has the ocean right next to it sure, but can they use it ? NO! The mountains are the only way of bringing water to the city. Another reason they need the water is because a booming city like San Francisco has a lot of people and not enough water to support it.
