Rock Art Dig

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Welcome to the Third Annual Camp Internet Rock Art Dig!!! November is NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY Month and we are celebrating native arts by studying ROCK ART this week. This beautiful Native American form of communication was for pre-historic tribes what the Internet is for us – a powerful way to share ideas, information, history, and knowledge.

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery#1 – Rock art can be any size – from a tiny drawing to huge images larger than a human being. It can exist as a single image, or be part of a large panel of images created over generations by many different people of a tribe. There are two main styles of rock art – carved (called petroglyphs), or painted (called pictographs). Which type of rock art is the image in the picture above?

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery#2 – What type of rock art is in this picture?

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery#3 – The Chumash rock art, a style shown in the picture above, is famous around the world for its amazing colors. Can you tell us where the colors came from ? button

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery#4 – Rock Art can be found all over the world on all continents. In the Pacific Southwest many tribes used Rock Art as a way to communicate, but not necessarily to other people, some researchers think the rock art was a form of prayer. What do you think this rock art image, from the California Backcountry as intended to communicate? It is from the Coso area on the eastern side of the Sierras.

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery#5 – Unfortunately some people do not respect rock art sites and so gates and fences have been erected to protect them. Some of Camp Internet’s teachers visit a protected rock art site during their summer training. Protected by California State Parks, this Chumash Painted Cave is thought to contain what type of images ? button

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery#6 – Camp internet is building its own ROCK ART GALLERY for educational use. Click on this button and open the Chumash Gallery. Name three images you think you recognize as you click through this colorful gallery.

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery#7 – Fortunately for future generations, there are scientists, artists, and people around the world who really enjoy seeing the rock art that still remains for us to study and consider. Camp brings a Trail Guide from this organization to answer questions each year – what is the name of the organization he works with to preserve rock art ? button

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery #8 – Other people who love rock art also make their living photographing rock art. The ARARA group gives out awards for best photography and one year this photographer button won the award. At his web site, if you click on the words ROCK ART, you can visit his work or go straight there by clicking on this button What does he say is one of the most thrilling things about his work ?

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery #9 – How OLD is rock art and what are some ideas on who it was created by ? button

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
DIG Discovery #10 – Pick any image from the Camp Internet Rock Art Gallery and tell us what you think the artists was trying to communicate. button

Your Camp Guides: . . . . Fri, Nov 16, 11:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
********************* FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY - Teachers – we encourage rock art projects at your school. with large chalks students can draw beautiful group murals on their playground surface. Using brown craft paper or plain white paper with earth colored pencils, they can draw rock art images. Or classrooms have done rock art drawings on fine sandpaper too! Send us digital pictures of your best works! We will be building a Student Rock Art Gallery to showcase their work. ***************************

Answer to Dig #9 Most pictographs are probably less than 2000 years old; they are often too fragile to survive much longer. In many areas of the state, shamans or medicine men made rock art to preserve a record of their visionary trances.

Dig #10 Anasazi. There is a picture of a rock with a slice of sunlight on it while the rest of the rock is in shadow. This is a sun dagger. The sun dagger travels accross a circular drawing that represents when particular times of the year are. For instance, summer solstice may be marked in the center of the drawing. When the dagger crosses the mark for the summer solstice the day for the ceremony has arrived.

The Chumash rock art, a style shown in the picture above, is famous around the world for it’s amazing colors. Can you tell us where the colors came from? The paints were made from different things like pigment paintings, there made mostly from minerals, like red was made from iron oxide called hematite, or red ochre they were made with water, animal fat or plant juices. To draw with them, they either used their finger or make brushes with animal tails. That’s how they made paint.

3 Why were the paintings made? Neither as art to be admired nor as simple graffiti -- they were probably made for religious reasons. Shamans, or Chumash priests, are thought to have made these paintings to influence supernatural beings and forces to intervene in human affairs. We can only guess what these mysterious symbols meant to their creators, but they may represent mythic figures, natural phenomena, or abstract concepts. What did the colors come from?
