Fleming Middle School , Lomita signs in : Al Zabloski 's 6,7,8 LH History class We are covering California standards as a policy in these classes. The Great SouthWest theme fits nicely with the 6 grade Ancient history curriculum. At this time the Standards have us covering the Islamic Empire in seventh ; we connect here through "current events" and also through comparisons of similar climates , topographies, types of dwelling, tribal cultures.etc. The 8th grade class gets a healthy serving of Native American lore through U.S. History Standards supplemented with Camp Internet's technology-driven and thematic website and support materials.Comparative cultures follow the multicultural components. All are participating in improving computer litercy, language literacy and art-based related projects. Having Educational Fun! AZ

If you were a Chumash living on the mainland- what would you gather or make that would be your most important and valuable trade item? I would trade red pigment because the people from the Chumash Island would come and trade with me.

I teach the fourth grade at Ridgeview Elementary School in Yucaipa. We are located at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains. I have been part of Camp Internet for three years now, and have really enjoyed it. The nearly 100 students that have taken part in Camp have had an incredible experience. I have taken two classes on overnight trips to Yosemite National Park, with another trip scheduled for this May. Many of the past students have said they have learned more using the technology then they ever thought they would. Parents have also commented that their children know more about technology than they do. I have had many guests come in as part of the Camp Internet program, and have developed tons of great resources and connections.

Janet Gallatin/Madison : . . . . Thu, Nov 8, 8:52AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello. My fourth grade class is at James Madison School, located in Indio in the Coachella Valley. Our portion of the lower desert is rapidly growing. The desert once covered with mesquite, palo verde, and creosote and the land once used for agriculture, covered with date palms and citrus groves are now covered with houses, stores and golf courses. I have participated in the Island track for three years, and appreciate the opportunity to incorporate technology into the classroom. This year's students are eagerly working on their passports; and they like the challenge of the digs. A constant "buzz" of excitement caused by their anticipation of the field trip to Anacapa Island is always present. They cannot stop talking about the ocean animals that they hope to see. The challenge for me is time management. Our grade groups for language arts for two hours a day, which does not leave much time with my homeroom class. Even though we cannot spend as much time as I would like, the students are learning and are enjoying themselves with all Camp Internet activities that we do. It will be a great year!

Macias-Tulsa: . . . . Thu, Nov 8, 3:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Room 11 at Tulsa Street Elementary loves Camp Internet. Our teacher is Ms. Macias. We are a fourth grade class in Granada Hills. We love science, art and researching interesting topics. Turner/Tulsa 5th: . . . . Thu, Nov 8, 3:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We are a fifth grade class at Tulsa Elementary and are enjoying our campinternet experience very much. We plan to use the GPS device to map our campus. We are looking forward to learning more about the Chumash Indians and their culture. Many of my students have been exploring the different rooms in campinternet and filling in their passports. My students have shown much enthusiasm in the different digs, especially as most of them have read Island of the Blue Dophins and can access prior knowledge.

Most of the students have found the native American lives to be very interesting and they have used this information as part of thier writing for other assignments. Each has tried to envision their lives as a Chumash or a Modoc child living in the backcountry of early California.

Welcome to room 705, the home of thirty Camp Internet explorers. We are part of Madison Elementary School that has a population of about 1000 students. Madison is located in Indio, a desert community east of Palm Springs. Our desert is rapidly decreasing as new homes and businesses are being built. We are fortunate to be fellow campers with our neighboring classrooms of Mrs. Gallatin and Ms. Jackson. The students are extremely excited about participating in Camp Internet. While the students enjoy working on the digs and on their passports, they are particularly involved in finding their “spot” on the earth with the help of GPS.

Jim Jones, Valley View: . . . . Sat, Nov 10, 4:12PM PST (-0800 GMT)

The students are so excited about Camp Internet. There are currently 11 GATE students in the sixth grade and more being tested. WE are so excited to be Campers this year. Our school has around 700 students at this time. We are growing really quickly too. There are currently three sixth grade classes, two regular education classes with GATE cluster in one, and one bilingual class. This is going to be a greta year for us all. L.Mac Millan, Northridge Middle School: . . . . Fri, Nov 23, 5:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Greetings from Northridge Middle School. We are located about 1/2 mile from CSUN. Our immediate environment is fairly residential with major streets 1/4 -1/2 a mile away. We are also reasonably close to Lake Balboa and the Sepulveda Basin. Favorite activites in the community include: having outdoor bbq’s, soccer games, basketball, attending movies, and going to the mall. Student goals for camp internet, so far, are to research the Indian tribes who lived in California. We are close to finishing the novel The Light in the Forest, a story about the relationship between European colonists and the Lenni Lenape (Indians). As a spin off research project, students are researching a tribe for the purpose of helping a ficticious white captive acculturate to the tribe of their choosing. They will have to cover 10 different topics in their research. We hope to be able to include pictures in our next report.

Carmela Gomes - Nightingale Middle School - Allow me to tell you something about the School in which I teach and the 6th grade children with whom I am privileged to work. First of all you will be hearing shortly from my partners, all 10 of them in grades 6, 7, and 8, from Nightingale as they become trained and get on board. We are a 6-8 grade school located at the junction of the 110 and 5 freeways, just North of Dodger Stadium. There are 1980 students and many teachers and staff. Even my own son is on the staff as a Campus Aide, so we are a big family. I have an eight plus iMac classroom because of the training and monies from the Schools for Advanced Studies program of which I am a member. The students are in groups of 3 or 4 and rotate their focus so as to insure that they get the most out of their sessions. We already reported on one of field trips to the Southwest Museum. Suddenly, that pristine example of exquisitely preserved realia is the place they all want to return. Our school is a 7 minute bus ride, 1/2 hour walk. Since we are the Global Gardens group, we are getting to study many different digs and information sites. Also, we are part of the Space Explorers, Inc., Orbital Lab project and have little hot houses in three classrooms. We are going to be preparing several small plots on the school grounds and since Home Depot is our adopted partner, we are going to get fences to preserve the areas. We have contacted several classrooms to be our partners in care and they are delighted. The DWP for the City of Los Angeles is having a poster contest on renewable resources and a beautification contest for schools so the Garden theme works in our favor as we have an Environmental Club on campus. We will continue posting for the next three weeks and there are several students who have computers and will be checking the Camp Internet site during the holidays when they can record some of the readings that they are doing to provide them with background information. This week we will be going to the Skirball Museum on an "Archaeological Dig" of a "tell" in Israel, so we will take the GPS unit and describe the site. On of the activities we will be involved in as a follow up to the curricular trip will be using Image Processing to reconstruct "artifacts" from the tutorials that I was trained on this summer. Those of you who are interested in learning more about Image Processing can log on to the Center for Image Processing in Education, CIPE, site www.evisual.org and choose software to learn more about this process. The students will actually be manipulating images to fit together broken pieces of pottery, baskets, and bas relief. This is all very exciting and fascinating and the students are anxious to go on line each day. Thank you.

Hello Camp Internet Campers and Outpost Guides. My name is Joan Ward, and I teach 4th grade at Maple. My class of 33 students have been having a great time using the internet and taking part in all of the great Camp Internet activities. Many of my students have tried answering the questions in the Internet Digs, and all have participated in the Campwide chats. All of my boys and girls have enjoyed learning to use e-mail. They recently wrote a letter to President Bush, and have even submitted jokes to kids sites on the web. If you have never been to Fontana, then you might not know that we are home to the new California Speedway. It's a very beautiful race track at the foot of the San Bernardino mountains. If you would like to learn more about our class, or about our "windy" city, you can e-mail us, and we promise to write you back. Have a great holiday season. Peace on Earth and blessings to everyone.

Stephanie Schroeder at Solana Vista School: . . . . Wed, Nov 28, 7:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello from Solana Beach , CA. This is the first year my second grade class has been involved with Camp Internet. Mainly my GATE students have been involved at this point, but I hope to get more of the class involved later. This group of students is enthusiastic and enjoys tying in the technology element of learning with the actual art of gardening on the Solana Vista School grounds. We garden about twice a week for an hour. First here is some background information about our school. Solana Vista School is one of five elementary schools in Solana Beach School District located in the coastal San Diego County. It has a kindergarten through third grade configuration serving approximately 394 students which includes about 100 Limited English Proficient (Spanish) and 48 Special Education students in an integrated classroom setting. Solana Vista seeks to provide a broad-based educational program which instills enthusiasm for learning; develops a mastery of basic skills, critical thinking and problem solving; recognizes and respects the uniqueness of each child and enhances a childs self-esteem; encourages a strong sense of purpose and good citizenship; and provides successful opportunities. Solana Vista has created an outdoor garden classroom which includes classroom plots, a greenhouse, and a composting area. Located in the coastal region of Southern California, our soil consists of poor quality fill dirt made up of a mixture of clay, silt and sand that has been excessively compacted. Very low rainfall and hot dry winds that make gardening a challenge in our coastal region are considered as we maintain our seasonal crops and native plants. These conditions reinforce the need for composting because our soil demands ecological enrichment. With the expertise of Dr. John Daily, a University of California Cooperative Extension trained Master Gardener and community member, the establishment of a composting programs is planned. Dr. Daily is associated with Quail Botanical Gardens, Encinitas, CA which has an extensive training program for community composting training. The garden and the concept of composting helps children understand the need to be stewards of nature. It is through the garden at Solana Vista where children learn the cycles of life and provides a meaning-based center for learning concepts tied to the school curriculum. In addition, our school principal has supported the development of the garden by enabling teachers to receive professional development training through Life Lab, funding us through grants, involvement with garden committee meetings, and reaching out for community support. It is with the caring nature of all members of the school community which has allowed our Growing Discoveries Garden to develop over time. Please press the button to further explore our garden. button Solana Vista Growing Discoveries Garden is utilized by two thirds of the staff. Over the years, teachers have attained an interest to implement garden activities in weekly lessons. We have 12 raised beds, a succulent section and two new garden areas which are in the process of development. One area is the Native Plant theme focus for the third grade. The second section is larger and will be utilized for crop plants like corn, pumpkins, gourds, cotton, peanuts, watermelon,...The plan is to create 24x3 raised beds. A portion of the area will be sectioned off for outdoor classroom discussions where bails of hay would be lined up in rows for seating. This year is the first year my second grade class has been involved with the Global Garden through Camp Internet. They have learned about the Three Sisters Garden. Last week a small group of my young scientists learned about the GPS. They each had the opportunity to map two plants each using the personal navigator. Each child was successful in retrieving the latitude and longitude of the plants. Our class worked on the spreadsheet and we are now ready to send in the hard copy. We are preparing to do the research and investigation for the Passport as our classroom is getting equipped with a TV monitor and hook-up with the computer for whole-group lessons. We plan to get more involved as the school year unfolds. So far my class has been excited about Global Garden and parents have been extremely supportive of the impact it has on their children. They too want to get more involved and hope to be a part of the next Family Night.

Hello again, I teach at Hillside Elementary School. This is my 21st year. I would really like to be able to use computer technology in the classroom, but I also need to be really proficient. Eventually I want to do photography and be able to print and size and crop my own photos on the computer. That is a retirement project, however, along with my painting and crafts. At the moment my 5th graders still need me so I will hang in there for a little while longer. My youngest daughter is a graphic designer and makes a good living at it, almost as much money as I make, after only about 5 years. Life certainly is not boring. Bye for now.

Greetings from Monte Vista Elementary School, a few miles north of downtown LA in Highland Park. I teach 4th grade and am very excited to be a part of the Channel Island Expedition this year with Camp Internet. The students have enjoyed the digs so far and we look forward to our time in the computer lab each week when we can discover something new about this fascinating area of California. Being from a school where we are overcrowded and have only a small concrete playyard surrounded by chain link fence makes the islands all the more inviting!

Camp Internet Since September we’ve done a lot of things with Camp Internet. We’ve constructed mammoths, two walking field trips, and Island digs. Two of my classmates made the mammoth. They kind of took a long time to finish. When they finished Miss. Bowie/Payne made copies of the kit, so every student in the class would make a mammoth. I got one but I haven’t finished. That is what we did for mammoths. On our walking field trip we saw different kinds of plants. We saw a palm tree, Yuka plant, Lemon trees, Banana trees, Birds of Paradise, Cactus, and a California oak tree. On that walking field trip the GPS unit did not work, so we had to go on another walking field trip to get the GPS readings. That is what we saw for our walking field trip. Every morning when we come back to the classroom, we go to our Island Digs. It is not the same people who go every morning. Each group answered at least one question. It was so interesting learning about the Native Americans on Channel Island.

Our first project was to chat with Dr. John Johnson, curator of anthropology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The class was enthralled with the idea of chatting. Our first project was for the students to become familiar with the Channel Islands. Using modifications and one to one assistance the students: became familiar with vocabulary words through word searches, color coed a map of Southern and Northern Channel Islands, created a model of the Channel Islands, read and discussed the Introduction to Channel Islands, Native Americans (Chumash and Gabrielinos), and housing and transportation

: . . . . Fri, Jan 25, 1:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
(This posting was composed collaboratively by students in the DHH classes at Carnegie MS.) We are the Highlanders of Andrew Carnegie Middle School. Andrew Carnegie was born on Nov. 25, 1835. He was born in Scotland. He was a philanthropist. He died on Aug. 11, 1919. The school is in Carson, California. Our school is big – it has 1800 students. We have a lot of grass and flowers. The mural in our photo is being created by the students in Mr. Behringer’s class. (We took a GPS reading at the mural: elevation 25 ft., N 33.83049, W118.25877.) The original painting was painted by Van Gogh. Every year Mr. Hino’s class makes a yearbook. Sometimes in the yearbook they put caricatures of the different teachers. We are in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing classes. We’re in these classes because we have hearing problems. Some people can sign, some people can talk, and some people can do both. We use hearing aids and auditory trainers to make sounds louder. Mrs. Severance is our audiologist who checks our hearing aids and trainers every Wednesday. We go to speech every Wednesday. The speech teacher helps us to speak better. The interpreter is a person who signs when one of us goes to a mainstream class. Then we can understand the teacher and hearing students. In our school, we have six periods and Homeroom. The sixth, seventh, and eighth graders have different subjects like English, Math, Science, History, electives, and Reading. We have a Christmas assembly and other assemblies about behavior. The sixth graders are 11 and 12 years old. The seventh graders are 12 and 13 years old. The eighth graders are 13 and 14 years old. Our school is in Carson, but some of the deaf and hard of hearing students live in different cities like L.A., Torrance, and South Gate. Some kids who live far from Carnegie ride the bus to school. In our Science class, every student must do a science project. We like doing science projects. For our English and History classes, we are working on the Channel Islands section in Camp Internet. Our teacher showed us different things that we are going to be using for our project like the folders, GPS, notepad, books, seeds and jiffy pots, and the weather center. We used the digital camera and to take pictures that we will post to the Camp Internet website. Leonie Hall, a deaf and Hard of Hearing student, painted the mural in our photo in 1987. We thought it would be nice if we took our mascot, the Beaver, with us on all of our field trips. Hopefully, we are going to meet different kids over the Internet. We would also like to use the GPS to know the direction, latitude, longitude and elevation of places we visit.. We are very excited to participate in Camp Internet because it is fun. We will enjoy learning about different people, places, and cultures.

J Dutra: . . . . Sun, Jan 27, 7:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello fellow campers, I'm John Dutra a fifth grade teacher from Dana Elementary in Nipomo, California. Our school is grades 3-5, and we have about 725 students. I have been with the Camp for four years on the Island track. My students have really enjoyed the Camp Internet experience. This will be our third year of fundraising to take a trip out to one of the Islands. The first year we went to Santa Cruz Island, last year to Anacapa, and this year we have scheduled another trip to Anacapa. Most of our Camp computer work is accomplished in our Lab, but thanks to Camp Internet, we are also able to work out of our classroom with three computers online. Each year the students present a science project for Open House which relates to some information that we have studied at the Islands. Last year we had some great projects about the ocean currents, the migration of many of the animals to the Island (including the Mammouth), the weather patterns in and around the Islands, and many on the ocean habitat of the Islands. The students really enjoyed the making of the models for these projects. This year I plan to take some digital photos of the students work. It is great to be part of the Camp Internet experience. The Camp personnel are great people, and each year they add to an already wonderful program. I look forward to another great year.

Hello fellow educators! We're enjoying working with Camp Internet, especially the Southwest track. We'll be using concepts from other tracks that teach the 5th grade standards. I had good success with creating plaster of paris fossil molds, if anyone is looking for a hands on activity for teaching fossils. Napa St School is located in Northridge, CA. Our students are very kind and very motivated to learn. I look forward to everything I'm learning on CI as well!

Hi Everyone, I noticed that quite a few pictures of students are being posted. While I think this is neat (personally) I feel impelled to tell you to have some caution. Check your District's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) or other policy that might cover this. You should be looking for a photo release policy of some sort. Please look into the Children Internet Protection Act (CIPA). You should be careful of what liability you and the District might be responsible for. I hope that this does not dampen your enthusiasm. Good luck all, Ted Yamane Instructional Technology Applications Facilitator (ITAF) District A Los Angeles Unified School District tyamane@lausd.k12.ca.us

Hello, we are the 1st and 5th grades from Maxwell Elementary in Maxwell, New Mexico. We are a small school. We can see the Rocky Mountains to the West, but we are out on the beginnings of the Great Plains. Our village was named after an original Spanish land-grant that covered most of the N.W. of the state. We have dinosaur footprints nearby—in fact, the 1st T-rex print was found about 80 miles away. We are making baskets and we tried making rock paintings. We go into Camp 1 or 2 times a week to read and see what is new. Remember—New Mexico is the 47th state in the United States of America!
