Spring School Outpost Reports

Mrs. Vernita Mason@Nightingale Middle School: . . . . Tue, Apr 23, 6:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Nightingale Middle School students went on a field trip on February 20, 2002 to four local parks. Mrs. Mason’s and Mrs. Cohen’s students went to Elyria Canyon Park. Mrs Spencer’s and Mrs Carroll’s students went to Rainbow Canyon Park. We all met at Sycamore Grove Park for lunch. Our final destination was the LA River Center. ... ...The hike in Elyria Canyon was breathtaking. It was a beautiful spring day with a lot of trails to follow. The stand of Black Walnuts is one of the few remaining untouched Black Walnut stands in California. Elyriia Canyon Park is a 35 acre tract of land which was slated for housing development. The neighboring community worked with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to buy the land to preserve it for migrating birds and the natural inhabitants. Some views from the Park show how this park is nestled near dense population and yet it is large enough for one to feel a communion with nature. ... button ...At Sycamore Grove Park students participated in an experiment on seed germination. They wanted to see what soil was best for quick germination of California native plant seeds. Students collected dirt from Rainbow Canyon, and with three different commercially prepared potting soils planted the native seeds from our Camp Internet backpacks..... ... The Los Angeles River Center is located two blocks from our school. It was formerly the home of Lawry’s corporate headquarters. It has a beautiful cluster of Spanish style adobe builldings, a fountain and landscaped gardens. The buildings and grounds have been preserved by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and now house a community technology education center, North East Trees and a small museum displaying the history of the Los Angeles River. The grounds also are home to River Garden Park, park-like setting with native plants and a waterway for community enjoyment. ... The North East Trees is a community group which helped us find the points of interest at both Elyria and Rainbow Canyon. Mrs. Lynnette Kampe arranged for Mrs Spencer and Mrs Cohen’s classes to have a field guide and shovels to plant Walnut seeds in the earth. North East Trees is headquartered at the Los Angeles River Center. button The River Center museum display informs visitors about the Los Angeles River watershed which collects from nearby mountains and arroyos, the natural flora and fauna, the 1938 LA River flood, and the development of the River for flood control. Local citizen groups are trying to restore the nearby Los Angeles River to a more natural state. button button ....This field trip provided students the opportunity to explore their own community. The students learned about native plants, urban forests, human impact on the environment and community attempts to preserve the native habitats for migrating birds and other forms of wildlife. Students took GPS readings of the locations of Black Walnut trees and recorded their data on pads. They had field guides and specific activities to accomplish at each location. Students used digital video cameras and digital or film cameras to photo document their experiences. Others used sketchpads and colored pencils to draw the plants they encountered, some students made watercolor paintings. Some students collected butterflies with a net. ....Back in the classroom, students are pre-writing their field reports in Apple Works in preparation for uploading them. Students downloaded the digital video footage in iMovie and made stills. .They will then resize the images in Graphic Converter so they can be uploaded to the Internet and attached to their field reports. Soon they will edit the film of the field trip for Nightingale Middle School’s Showcase of Excellence. ..Students using cameras to photograph and document their experience are creating museum board displays of their learning experiences. Photographic images can be scanned in the classroom for students who wish to use their images for their on-line field reports. ...Los Angeles City Councilman Ed Reyes sponsored two buses for our students to attend this field trip. Students wrote thank you letters to the councilman for providing transportation to make our field trip possible. ... button ... This experience helped the students learn how people working together can make a difference in their community and their environment. It also helped them to understand what their own community offers free of charge for enjoyment and educational activities. Everytime we view the videotape from our field trip we are reminded how urban forests contribute to the quality of life in our urban Los Angeles neighborhoods.

On February 20,2002 we went on a field trip. We are from Nightingale Middle School and went with our teachers Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Mason. We went to 3 different locations: Elyria Canyon Park, Sycamore Park, and Los Angeles River Center and Gardens. When we first got to Elyria Canyon Park we tested the GPS locator and then we went to hike. While we were hiking we had to answer some questions that our teacher gave us. What we saw that was dangerous is a steep hill, muddy, and poison oak. We find an insect that was a bee and a moth. We took the moth back to our class and my teacher put it in the freezer after that she use the moth as a display on the wall. One of the poison thing that we could of got poison is the Poison Oak, once you touch it you will get a blister. But, lucky none of us got any blister from our class . After that we went to Sycamore Park for lunch and some of our classmate planted some plants for an experiment. Finally, the last place we went was to the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens. What we did there was we walked around and saw the water fall. And the water fall looked really nice and some of my classmate took their shoes off and they walk in the water . The River Center is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

Field Report On March 20, 2002, my classmates in Mrs. Cohen 2nd period, went on a field trip to Elyria Canyon, Sycamore Park and the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens. My classmates went because they wanted to observe the plants, animal life, and wind directions, and take GPS recording. The different plants and animals my classmates saw were birds, fishes, mosquitoes, poison oak, bees, ants, dogs, coyote, berries, and many more interesting things. They told me that they had to hike up Elyria Canyon, and they also told me that they ate at Sycamore Park.

On February 20, 2002 our class went on a field trip to three wild life parks. The first place that we went to was Elyria Canyon, I liked it there the most there was a lot of beautiful sights. There were many walnut trees along the path and there was a cool plant called the wild cucumber A.K.A “sexy plant”. There was also a lot of dangerous places like steep hills ,wet grass that someone could easily slip and fall, there was also poisen oak that can give you a really bad rash. While we were there we did not find any animals or not many insects. We found two moths reprducing and Mrs. Cohen (sexy science teacher) pinned the moths and put them up for display. The park that we went to after was Sycamore Park. There was a lot of big tall trees and there was a little playground and every one was playing freeze tag. There was a lot of squrrils and a lot of birds in the trees, in the center was a big stage and seats all around it. We ate our lunch there. Tables are there to eat on but mostly nobody used them, every one ate sitting in the grass.

Field Report 4/25/02 On February 20, 2002 the Nightingale Middle School Science Class went to Elyria Canyon, Sycamore Park, and the Los Angeles River Center. We went there to learn about the many plants that grow there and to GPS the different plants in those places. In Elyria Canyon my friends and I were walking around looking at the dangerous plants like the poison oak. We were also using the GPS’s to identify the location of the trees and the many plants. Ms.Cohen was showing us the cucumbers. After that we went to have lunch in Sycamore Park right there we were suppose to GPS the different plants and trees and instead we play freeze tag. Its was cool because all of the students were playing together. Our next ride was to go to Los Angeles River Center. There Vicky and I went to the River Garden Park and Vicky took off her shoes and waded in the water. One guy named Lino threw a a live worm at her and Vicky got mad. My friend Miriam and I were taking pictures at the tree and plants we also took a picture of the students that went on the field trip. It was really fun. Then we walked back to school.

Field Report On February 20, 2002 Mrs. Mason’s class at Nightingale Middle School went on a field trip. Three other classes also went. They are Campinternet students. We went on the field trip together. We planted seeds. It was fun and we had a lot of people to play around the park with. People were having fun together and they were playing like little kids around the park. When we got to the parks we had to write a note about what we saw on the field trip and write about a plant or flower. I saw a lot of flowers that have many different colors. Some flowers are red, yellow, white and pink. Those flowers not only have three colors but there were more than three colors, like purple or dark red.... On the field trip we also saw a lot of plants that are green but if the plants don’t have water they will die. In the park we had a lot of fun and there were a lot people to visit with.It was a good place to visit.

On February 20, 2002 Mrs. Mason’s class went to a field trip with three more classes. We went to Elyria Canyon Park. That place was the first field trip that we had. The councilman left the bus in the street. We went to the top of the hill to see the trees. Then we went to another side of the park to see more trees. Then we GPS many of the trees that were in the park. Then we were tired and we sat down to rest. Then we went back to the bus. Before we got on the bus, Mrs.Cohen had to sign the paper that we had pick ed up trash and put it in the bag. Then we went to Sycamore Grove Park in the bus. When we arrived there we had lunch. Then some teachers were doing experiments with plants. Our last place that we went is L.A. River Center. When we arrived there we look at those pictures that were on the wall. Then we had to go walking to school.

Field Report ...On February 20,2002 I went to Elyria Canyon with Mrs. Mason’s class. W e saw lots of things, like the Black Walnut Trees, Poison Oak,Toyon,Wild Elderberry Trees, and many other things. When we saw the trees and different things the class started to take pictures and videotaped it also. While we were there we found coyote scat spilled on the ground and animals prints around it. I wonder, how can plants or trees survive in a canyon? Where did these natural things come from?...

Mrs. Rivera's Kindergarten's What We Did During Winter Field Report …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….…………………………………………………………………………………….. Winter seemed like a good time to write some class books. Inspired by a few questions and topics in the Meteorology unit digs we wrote the following four class books: What Makes A Rainbow?……Where Does Weather Come From?……What Is Meteorology?……and …….What Makes Wind Happen? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. To the question What Makes A Rainbow?…The students answered: "A rainbow. You see it in the sky. The rainbow is the a guy is inside the rainbow and the girl see the guy and she get in the rainbow." Carlos…………………………………………………. "A rainbow? Falling down flowers" Jose……………………………………………. "A …Jesus make the colors of it." Ray…………………………………………………. "The sun makes orange back go to the rainbow. Trevor……………………………………. "Some kind of color glasses. The guy holds after the rain. Also colored bottles. When the rain stops to make a beautiful color rainbow." Nicole……………………………………………………………….. "The sky..they do colors first red, then orange, then yellow, then green, then blue, then purple." Johnson…………………………………………………………………………. "Red,blue, pink, yellow, purple, brown, green, purple, orange and that I say orange already? Oh yes. I remember. And white…yes. " Silvia…………………………………………………….. "The clouds." " Eliezer……………………………… "Rainbow? When it rains, when it stops there is going to be a rainbow." Janelle………………. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. To the question Where does Weather Come From?… This is what the kids answered: "From Mexico" Carlos………………………………………. "It comes from the beach" Jose……………………………………. "From weather?, from the sky. Ray………………………………….. "I don't know." Trevor……………………………… "Weather comes from up in the sky." Nicole………………………………….. "Up in the sky." Johnson………………………………… "Weather come from? She come for somewhere. When it snows the wind blows. " Janelle………………………. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….A Volcano Book we made was inspired by the volcano dig…….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..This winter we also began working on some seed packets for seeds that we collected from our garden and garden produce. We have pumpkin seeds, morning glory seeds, sweet pea seeds, sunflower seeds, radish seeds, and cosmos seeds………………………………………………………………………………………………………To make our seed packets, first we drew a picture of our plant (flower or vegetable) using the Paint program on the computer. Then we put our graphic in a template, make a heading, wrote relevant information on the packet copied from commercial seed packets, and then wrote our names so that everybody knows who designed the packet. We cut the templates out, glued them to form a pocket, and then we counted the number of seeds that went into each packet………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………This is what the seed packets look like …………The template for the packets looks like this: ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….If you want to find out more about making seed packets you can go to button ………………………………………..We are selling our seed packets for fifty cents each to earn money for our garden projects. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR GARDEN……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….We spent most of the winter filling barrels with soil, labeling them with some plastic letters that we painted so that we have the alphabet, and planting plants in each barrel that begin with that letter. ……………………………..……………….…..Bulbs that we planted in the fall are blooming now. This is a picture of one of our barrels. …We recently harvested some radishes that we planted in a barrel outside our door. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..As spring approaches we are weeding our garden plot to prepare the soil for planting
