Have you ever been camping? ............... Have you ever slept out in a yard under the stars? If you have, then you will understand what famous California writers describe in their different outdoor living stories. Going to sleep with the starry sky for your roof, laying down in a sleeping bag upon the earth as your floor, and awaking to the moist scents of dawn, the little birds wakening with you – these are memorable experiences for anyone who has slept out of doors. Eating food cooked over an open campfire, learning to find clean water (and brush your teeth with out a sink), or maybe chasing a bear away from your food? Such challenges face any outdoors adventurer and overnighter. If you have never slept out side – find a way to do so!! Maybe an overnight in your school year with your class? Or an overnight in a friend’s yard? Or get your parents to take you camping? It is one of the greatest adventures we can go on today.

Today in the Team Challenge we are going to do two things............ First, we are going to read over John Muir’s Wild Ride and the Muir/Teddy Roosevelt camping trips. If you have already read those stories, then look ahead to the Mark Twain and Wharton James writings we will be working on next week and read those.
Camp Team: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 8:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
TEACHERS - if you find only your classs is in the chat room for the challenge - divide your students into two groups nad have each group be either Team 1 or Team 2 ... works great !
Camp Team: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 8:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
*Team 1 and **Team 2 – each of you please tell us which of these stories is your favorite and why – and which you yourself would be willing to do. These may not be the same choice – you may end up selecting two different stories to answer this question.

*Team 1 – if any of you have ever been camping, tell us the scariest thing that happened on your camping trip – or the most exciting thing. If none of you have been camping yet, tell us about an exciting camping trip you have heard about.
Camp Team: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 8:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
*Team 2 – if any of you have ever been camping, tell us about the wild animals you saw and what you observed them doing. If none of you has been camping yet, tell us about wild animals you may have seen in a park or a field trip.
Camp Team: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 8:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
By sharing these TRUE stories with us, you are beginning to develop the same skills in storytelling that our famous authors developed. You are learning to take an experience you had, that you can speak about first hand, and turn it into a story that informs and entertains others.
Camp Team: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 9:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
*Team 1 and **Team 2 – once you have posted your two answers to the questions above, give everyone time to post theirs as well. Once the stories of your wildest camping trips are up – the ones based on student’s own experiences – select the one student whose story you think is the most exciting, weird, or interesting, and then post a comment to them. To do this, you need to first identify who you are writing to. If their handle reads “John James, Mrs. Winkelman’s Class, Team 1”, then write back – To John James, Team 1. This way they know you are posting a message to them personally. Tell them what you thought was cool, or scary, or brave about their story. HAVE FUN swapping outdoor living stories!!!

I liked The wild ride because when the man was riding the tree,it was funny, and wild.
team 6 : . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 2:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
we think John Mere is a liar, because the tree cant rock back and forth like that. And we dont think he could would be able to handle that kind of weather.

I like the Wild Ride because it felt like I was there.I liked the Wild Ride because he was riding on a tree.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 2:08PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Team 6 - it IS a wild an unbelievable tale ..but I for one have to believe it because Muir did even crazier things than this .. which makes this more believable - from earth quakes to waterfalls to snow sotrms he immersed himself in the most pwerful forces the earth could hand him - and survived !!!
Team 5: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 2:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think that the story that Jonh Mere wrote is not true.

team 6 : . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 2:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We think that the most exiting thing that happened was, when I was camping with my whole family was camping out and it was like 12:00 and my dad went to get fire wood cause we were getting cold so he left to get some and he didnt come back for a while and my family was wondering where he was. So we were getting scared. Then we heard a scratch on the tent and we jumped. so I went to check it out and my daddd jumped out and made me jump so high my pants fell off.
team#2: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 2:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
One of our team members went camping on his trampoline in his back yard. He saw a kowala bear, but it was a stuff animal. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!When another one of the members went camping and saw a bear track and showed th mother and it ended up eating up all the food. Another one of our members went camping and stepped in the mud and had to walk back to camp with her feet all covered in mud.Our last member went camping in Moral Bay and lost a sanle in the sea.
team3: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 2:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)

We dont know if it can be true or not because it said the wind was blowing like 50 miles a hour, and it was snowing and raining and it was really stormy. It really does sounds beautiful but it kind of sounds fake.My team and I agree that we wish it could happen to us,with the beautiful rain falls and the snow every were, with the trees going back and forth it really sounds cool.
Team 4: . . . . Fri, Sep 22, 2:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)

You might be interested to know that my office - where Camp Internet comes from - is on a ranch where there are deer, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, rattlesnakes, badgers, owls, roadrunners, hawks, vultures, and rare kites ( a white bird)- but we only see a few each year. Once a baby mountian lion came right up onto our patio and looked at US as if we were on his property !!! And this summer two rattlesnakes had the nerve to come right up to our front and back doors - THAT was really scary ........ It is very exciting ot be around wild animals .... they are so quiet and yet so powerful. Oops, I forgot to mention the skunks .. you can smell them even if you never see them !!
