We have had an excellent turnout for tonight. In order to make our chat time with Dr. Scheetz the most rewarding, we ask each classroom holding an open house to submit their top 6 questions and family homeusers to submit 2 to 3 questions. This will give our guest TrailGuide the best chance of responding to as many questions as possible.

We are ready for the dino dig! LAE eagles Want to know if it is true that a brontosaurus has two brains.....
Hi L.A.E. Eagles! Well, not exactly. Every animal has within its spinal cord a "swelling" called a ganglion. These ganglions (or ganglia) are found over the hips and over the shoulders where a great amount of nerves branch off from the spinal cord and travel down the legs and arms. They serve to take care of some of the reflexes right then and there without "bothering" the brain in the head. So it almost acts like a brain, but doesn't do any of the real thinking.

: . . . . Thu, Sep 28, 7:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
hi!Does a t-rex realy loose you if you stand still?........ Good question. I don't know how we'd test that. It is interesting that T-rex was one of the few dinosaurs with both eyes able to see forward. This gives an animal depth perception, which can be advantageous when your tracking down prey.

Hi LAE eagles-it's Cameron and family
: . . . . Thu, Sep 28, 7:12PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How do you think the Dinosaurs became extinct ?. . . . .That's a hard question and one that comes up all the time. We have to realize dinosaurs were changing all the time throughout the Mesozoic. Triassic dinosaurs gave way to different Jurassic dinosaurs which gave-way to Cretaceous Dinosaurs. By the end of the Cretaceous, the Earth was basically down to a limited number of dinosaur types. This was also a time when a continents were very active in their moving, sea levels were changing, climates were changing, and along with that the plants. This must have greatly affected the dinosaurs. It is pretty well substantiated there occurred an asteriod impact, and it is true, we seem not to find any dinosaurs after that event. The impact may have been the final blow, but it doesn't answer why some many other animals survived.

: . . . . Thu, Sep 28, 7:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi my name is Cameron from Sunset. Can dinosaurs see in color? . . . . . We think so. The closest living relatives to dinosaurs are crocs and birds -- both see color. In fact birds are very optically-minded. When we study dinosaur braincases (the area that held the brain) we see the optic lobe as very pronounced and sometimes as much as birds. Mammals are kind of unique in the animal kingdom for not being able to see the colr spectrum. Man is of course an exception to that.

Yes we are finding several new dinosaurs. We named Utahraptor a few years back and we will name 3 more in the next year or so.
: . . . . Thu, Sep 28, 7:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How do you come up with all the dinosaur names?......
Most of the names are based on something unique to that dinosaur. Like Stegosaurus is named after its plates, and Brontosaurus was named after its size. We use Latin and Greek roots that are descriptive about a certain feature which we feel diagnoses the animal. But because names are binomial (2 names: a genus and a species) we can also name it after the person who found it. Like we might name a dinosaur Bigasaurus smithi, after Arica Smith.

: . . . . Thu, Sep 28, 7:26PM PST (-0800 GMT)
what do scientist do to identify a fossil? . . . Good question! We have to do a LOT of HOMEWORK. We spend a lot of time studying other fossils and becoming familiar with them and getting a feel for where they differ. When we find something we don't recognize we compare it to the closest things we know like that. If we've looked everywhere we can to determine what it is and don't find anything like it, then we can name it something new.

We didn't think it was possible not too many years ago, but one of my collegues in Montana was studying the internal bone structure of T-rex and found some peculiar cells within the vascular canals of the bones. These canals served to carry blood to the ever-growing bone. Analyzing the cells, she determined they were dried-up red-blood cells that contained fragments of DNA.

what part of the world has most dinosours: In number of dinosaurs, I'd say North America. There are bone beds of hadrosaurs and ceratopsians miles long in Montana and Canada from mass death due to volcanic ash falls. North America probably leads in the numder of types as well. This is only because North America is better explored. As we look more across the world, we'll find more and more all the time.

Others had injuries that tried to heal over. Some trackways show dinosaurs limping, and still others with deformed feet.

Morgan, who was also at the dig today, wanted to know about the baby tooth she may have found. How do you date or tell if it is a baby or adult tooth? . . . . The tooth Morgan found was interesting because it broke right up the edge so we could see inside. It was a small Allosaurus tooth that was hollow. All teeth have an enamel covering and an inner layer of dentine and then the tooth inner cavity. As the animal ages, dentine layers form inside the cavity eventually filling it in. These dentine layers are microscopic but are laid down daily in all animals today. By counting the inside dentine layers a person can determine how old the tooth is. But dinosaurs were always going through teeth. Whenever one dropped out, another was growing up in its place. So a mature may be 120 days old, and the dentine layers have filled the inner cavity entirely.

Rod - how can you tell how fast a dinosaur may have moved when alive? . . . .
Some of the things we look at are the joints and leg length. If the head of the femur is very smooth and attaches well within the socket of the hip, this means there was ample motion. When you combine this with leg length, and especially comparing the lenght of the lower part of the leg to the upper part of the leg, then we get a ball-park estimate of relative speed. Tracks are also a big help because you have the stride length right in front of you.

I have heard that there is evidence of fosilized dinosaur and human footprints together. What do you think?. . . . This site in Texas is a very famous site. There are even Websites dedicated to it. The tracks that look like man-tracks are metatarsal prints from a theropod dinosaur. We will se the same thing pop up once in a while just over into Utah where there are huge theropod track-sites and a trackway will develop a "man-track" when the animal steps "wrong". To answer you question, no I don't beleive it to be man tracks.

Is it possible that a meteor can hit us like it hit the dinos?...... Sure! Debris from outer space is hitting us all the time. Just nothing that big. Thank goodness!

How many dinasaur bones have you found?......
I couldn't begin to count all the dinosaur bones I've found. The Mygatt-Moore Quarry where we worked today, has yeilded over 2500 identifiable bones so far. We've collected only 230 this summer.

How old do you think the dinosaur is ?... . .
Some of the things we look for to age a dinosaur is to compare how large it is to other individuls os the same species, and how well developed the bones are. If the bones are not very well developed, or the spines aren't firmly fused to the centrum on the vertebra, then it is a youngster.

How do you know you've found a fossil and not a rock?
LAE - Nikki L.: . . . . Thu, Sep 28, 8:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
This has been a lot of fun learning about the dinosaur. Thanks for taking time with kids, it is ever so important. I look forward to the next "fun night" with my daughter and all your knowledge.
Thanks again.

This is Travis Riley again! Have you found any dinosaur bones near Oak View, California?. . . . California would be a tough place to look. Most of the sediments that are the right age for dinosaurs, are ocean deposits. I haven't looked there however.

Thank you Dr. Scheetz - for two very great chat sessions today and a most excellent dig. We look forward to visiting again and will create an exciting web page for Camp to document todays expedition dig.

How do you know you've found a fossil and not a rock?. . . .Most fossils are rock now. A fossil bone will have cell structure to it, like real bone does today. The empty cavities and canals in fossil bone is just filled in with minerals --- essentially rock.
