Welcome to the Camp Internet Paleontology Dig ! Today we are going to be exploring all over California to uncover some amazing ancient life forms that once roamed our landscape. You will find a series of questions below, and imbedded in each question is a BUTTON that will link you to other sites on the Internet. Click on those buttons to read the materials that have the answers to the questions hidden in the text. To return to the chatroom and post your findings, use the browsers BACK button and then post your answers and findings. IMPORTANT - any time you post to the chat room, always include your name and school name - or class room name i.e. Mrs. Dennison's class at Orange - so we know who is posting. Say hello when you arrive so we know you are online - and then - Have fun !!

First, let’s explore the smallest and biggest fossils that have been found in California. For the following questions, you will want to click on this button and from the table of contents, search by fossil type to uncover the answers. Then come back and post your findings answer by answer. Here we go ……… Where in California can you find real ancient Ammonite fossils ? What caused their sudden extinction over 70 million years ago ? …………. Where in California can you find fossils of shark’s teeth ? What type of hill are they found in ?

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Using the same button ……… What are the biggest fossils in the world ? ………… Jack London, a famous California author, visited the petrified forest in California – where is it ? How was it formed ? Name the three petrified trees you can discover on the web at the petrified forest….. How about trilobites – where are they found in California ? Use the web site to hunt for pictures of the trilobites – what color rock are they in ?

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
One of Camp Internet’s upcoming Trail Guides that you will be invited to meet online in a few days discovered the oldest known dinosaur on the Pacific Coast of the United States. Where was Dr. Hilton’s dinosaur found ? How old is it ? and what animal alive today is a similar size? Use this button to hunt for the answers and report back.

Timothy - Camp: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Another fun way to explore what is in Camp Interent is to use the Image Map of the Channel Islands at button You can click on different parts of that map and explore great information.

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dr. Hilton's dinosaur belongs to the Hypsilophodonts. Find the link for that type of dinosaur on this link button and search for the answers to these questions : What did they eat ? And how many fingers did they have ? What was California like 115 million years ago when this dinosaur lived ? Desert ? Under water ? Forest ?

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Click on this button and at the bottom of the page, move on to page 2. from page two, answer these questions : What were Mosasaurs ? Where did they live ? What did they eat ? How do you think scientists know what they ate so many years ago ?

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Of all the fossil locations in California we are visiting today in the Dig – which one is closest to you ? And does anyone know of anyone who ever went there to gather fossils ?

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How big were the first mammoths that crossed the Channel waters to reach an island ? What was the name of the island these first mammoths reached ? As time went by, the water levels in the ocean lowered and that island changed. What did it become ? What made the ocean level change ? Here is the button to start gathering up answers.

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Try out the Camp Internet Paleo Quiz online at button - you may not know all of the answers yet, but go ahead and do your best ! Over the next few weeks you will be given assignments that will reveal all of the correct answers. At the end of the paleontology section, we will ask you to take the quiz again to see how much more knowledge you gained !

Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Oct 1, 8:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
REMINDER - when ever you need to get back up to the top of the Dig - type a large number in the Scroll Back box, then click on the chat button, and it will return you to the top. That way you can keep going back to answer more questions and dig-up more answers !

This spectacular fossil area is located in a beautiful canyon in the heart of the Lassen National Forest in the Tehama County of Northern California. Over millions of years, a creek named Mill Creek had cut deep into the Sierras exposing Late Cretaceous strata (approx. 80 to 90 million years ago). A few million years after that time, an extraterrestrial body hit the earth causing the extinction of the dinosaurs and the ammonites. This convenient fossil site is located near the top of a sandhill in the southern Santa Cruz Mountains range, just minutes away from highway 17 in the town of Scotts Valley of Santa Cruz County in Central California. The hill is a geological outcrop named the "Santa Margarita Formation" that spans through the Late Miocene Epoch (10 to 12 million years ago).
