Jason, I will have to admit that I have never found a dinosaur egg although I have found fragments. Our museum here has purchased a single egg from China but it is not a raptor. Raptors tend to be relatively small dinosaurs so most of their eggs would be relatively small and be similar in size to some of the flighless birds like the emu and ostrich.

Hi James There are a muriad of paths that one might take to become a paleontologist. I started first as a college Biology student who later turned to earth science and geology. Like some others I do not have much formal training in paleontology but rather I took paleontology as a direction in geology and with a solid biology background it turned out to be an exciting and fullfilling direction to go. If I wanted to become a paleontologist I would get a good foundation in both geology and biology and then get an advanced degree at one of the few colleges that have a specialty in paleontology like U.C. Berkeley or the University of Texas.

Yohana We are pretty sure now that dinosaurs became extinct when a comet or asteroid hit the earth 65 million years ago. We have found evidence world wide in the form of a layer of clay-like material in rocks that are of this age in various parts of the world. This layer contains soot from the fires that were set by the molten rock that was spashed up from the impact site on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Shocked quartz made by meteor impact is also found in the layer along with glass sheres from the molten rock and the element iridium from the meteorite itself. The clay-like material is probably mostly the dust from the impact that settled around the world. We think that this dust blotted out the sun light and cooled and shaded the earth for a year or more. The plants could not photosynthesize so food chains and webs broke down. The plants for the most part survived because their seeds roots and spores could wait for better conditions to return. The animals that survived were mostly the ones that could keep warm (birds and mammals) or those that could crawl of burrow into the groun (lizards, frogs crocodiles) When the dust cleared the mammals had inherited the earth and except for the birds, all the dinosaurs had perished.

Stephanie, jason, lizeth and alisha I don't know off had how big the largest T-Rex tooth is but we have a replica in the museum that is about the length of your forearm. One of my studens found a T-rex tooth tip on our field trip last summer to the dinosaur beds around Fort Peck Reservoir. We were also fortunate to visit the laboratory of Dr. Keith Rigby from Notre Dame University. Here he showed the students parts of a jaw and skull containing several T-Rex teeth from one of the largest tyranisaurids found in North America.

Anthony Kimbark I don't think I know the answer to your question but i do know where the most Sabertoothed cat sculls have been found. The La brea Tar Pits in the Los Angeles Basin. You can see some of thesefossils in the Page Museum beside the Tar Pits. You can also see the most wonderful display of ice age fossils on earth here too. The Smilodon, the saber tooth from the tar pits is also the state fossil of California. Most of these were excavated under the direction of Dr. Chester Stock of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena Ca.

Truman The most common ways that fossils are made in nature is for some sort of bone, shell or hard piece of wood to be rapidly buried befor bacteria and fungi can break them down. Clams live in mud and silt so they are alredy buried and hence because they are also a very numerous creature are the most common fossil brought to me. The microscopic fossis that make up chalk (foraminifera,coccolithophors), diatomite (diatoms) and radiolarian chert (radiolaria) have to be the most numerous fossil however.

Kristen That's my wifes name. Yes there are butterfly and other insect fossils as well. Sometimes there are lakes near errupting volcanoes. Volcanic ash may fall from the air onto the lake and killing butterflies and other insects. If it is very fine ash it will settle to the lake bottom and entrap the insects. Layer upon layer of this may entrap millions of insect. Some of these layers are called paper shales because the are as thin as paper and will split like opening a book to expose the butterfly within.

Christian, Regina, Kathy and Aline Dinosaur bones are kinda like gold. They are where you find them. Where you find them is in sedimentary rocks of Mesozoic age. Having said this we all should be aware that on government lands it is illegal for just anyone to pick up or excavate any kind of fossil bone. So if you want to find dinosaur bones you should go along with a paleontologist. Even the paleontologist must have a permit from the proper government employee.
